Carol Chappell Obituary

Salem - Carol Ann Chappell, 81, of Salem, passed away peacefully March 25, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 12, 1945, in Rockville, to the late Esther and Ken Wetmore.

A proud graduate of Rockville High School, Class of 1963, Carol went on to build a fulfilling career, working for Phoenix Insurance Company, S&S Worldwide, and Johnson Marine. Known for her strong work ethic and kind spirit, she formed lasting friendships everywhere she went.

In 1975, Carol married the love of her life, Herb Chappell Sr. Together, they built a warm, welcoming, and beautiful life in Salem, a place Carol cherished deeply.

Carol was a woman of many joys. She loved spending quiet afternoons reading, relaxing evenings watching Westerns, and creative moments crocheting. She nurtured a lifelong passion for gardening, found happiness attending local fairs especially to watch the ox pulls her family had competed in for decades, and cherished watching her son's many sporting events as he grew up. Above all, she deeply loved her family and her pets - especially her devoted dog Brutus; as well as her beloved dogs, Yankee and Noah, who welcomed her home in Heaven.

Carol is survived by her loving husband, Herb Chappell Sr. She leaves behind her son and stepdaughters: Beverly (Kenny) Moulton of Massachusetts, Cindy (Cecil) Chappell of South Carolina, and Herbie (Colleen) Chappell Jr. of Connecticut. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Wetmore of Florida; her eight cherished grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom brought her immeasurable pride and joy.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Norman Wetmore of Maine; and her stepdaughter, Jill O'Brien, of Pennsylvania.

Carol will be remembered for her gentle heart, her unwavering love for her family, and the warmth she brought into every room. Her legacy lives on in the generations she lovingly nurtured.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 30, directly at the Salem Green Cemetery, Hartford Road, Salem. The Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester has been entrusted with care of arrangements. For online condolences, please visit www.auroramccarthyfuneralhome.com.
