Carol Emblidge Obituary

Emblidge, Carol (nee Haaland)

February 24, 1943 - February 3, 2025

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away at the age of 81, after a full life. She died peacefully, with her husband of 57 years by her side. Carol was born on to Vincent and Beatrice Haaland, and she grew up in Kenmore, New York with her siblings Vince, Liz, Kathy and Chuck. As the eldest, Carol took on responsibility in the home early. She earned her teaching degree from Buffalo State College, where she particularly enjoyed studying children's literature and poetry, and then went on to teach elementary school in the Philadelphia and Buffalo regions. Carol married Warren Evans Emblidge, Jr. in 1967 at Kenmore Methodist Church and began their married life in Philadelphia. While Warren pursued an MBA, Carol supported them by teaching, simultaneously earning her MS.Ed at the University of Pennsylvania. They then moved back to Buffalo, ultimately settling in Orchard Park. Carol was a dedicated wife and devoted mother to her three children. She was well known for hosting large neighborhood parties, cooking elaborate holiday meals, and cultivating a beautiful garden. She volunteered at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, where she was a longtime member, and she supported the Albright Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. She valued education highly and instilled her love of learning in her children, forever impressing them with her vast vocabulary and her ability to win at Scrabble. Whether she was cheerleading at Kenmore West High School, driving around in her green Sunbeam Tiger convertible, teaching her husband to ski, competing on the tennis court, or preparing gourmet food aboard the family's sailboat, she approached life with verve. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends at home in Orchard Park, at the Buffalo Canoe Club in Ridgeway, ON, and in Naples, Florida, where she gladly escaped Buffalo winters. She was fortunate to have traveled to far-flung destinations ranging from Norway to Thailand. Most recently, she valued the support and friendships at Montabaur Heights in Clarence, where she and Warren moved after 51 years in Orchard Park. Carol is survived by her husband, Warren, Jr.; children, Meredith Keller (Kurt), Warren, III (Anne); and Alison Fromme (Chris); brothers Vincent Haaland Jr. (Karen) and E. Charles Haaland; and grandchildren Evan and Malia Keller, William and Alex Emblidge, and Nathan and Ian Fromme. She is predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth Haaland Frankle and Kathy Haaland-Hague. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Buffalo, www.hospicebuffalo.com, are greatly appreciated.

From: E. Charles Haaland (baby brother):
My sincere condolences to the entire Emblidge family & friends.
Carol was a pillar of the family and the firstborn of us 5 kids. I was the "baby" brother of the family & the youngest (nicknamed "Chucky") & I am her junior by about 14 years. We all looked up to her as her fellow siblings not only because she was the oldest, but she in fact was the most reliable and trustworthy of us five kids, and had a good common sense outlook on life and almost always gave good advice.
Moreover, in those early developmental years she was like a second mother to me, and she was an apt teacher and was actually the one who taught me how to tie my shoes when I was very little. Something even our own mom couldn't do maybe because I was too thick in the skull, ha ha!stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes) In any case It is no accident that her early vocation in life was actually as an elementary school teacher, something that she had worked hard for and it was obvious that she had a natural talent for teaching.
Finally, so many people's lives were impacted by her goodness & wisdom that she will always be fondly remembered & loved. We all miss her dearly.
