Carol Leach Obituary
LEACH (Collins), Carol Jean
Carol Jean Leach was born in Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, NJ to Sally E. and Wesley A. Collins. The addition of a younger brother, Stephen W. completed the family.
Carol was raised in Montclair, NJ. She graduated from Montclair High School in 1959. Carol attended Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She majored in History, earning her bachelor's degree in 1963. Carol was one of the "anonymous" students who, along with the The Greensboro Four, were instrumental in the desegregation of Greensboro businesses and lunch counters and a sit-in movement that spread across the country.
Carol returned home after graduation and went to work for the City of New York.
While doing so, she met Clarence C. Leach. They married in 1965. The couple resided in Montclair and they had two daughters: Kimberly M. and Jennifer S. Carol earned a Masters Degree in Science from Columbia University School of Social Work in 1990.
Post retirement, Carol was an active volunteer for many community groups. It was her role as mentor and Board Member of Sister to Sister Montclair Mentoring Group that was closest to her heart. The organization offers guidance and support to high school girls in Montclair as they prepare for college and post-high school life.
Carol was a proud grandmother to Bryce A. Rivers. Carol loved New Jersey but moved to the Atlanta, GA area in 2023 hoping to leave shoveling snow behind her.
Carol was a lover and patron of the Arts.
Carol is survived by her brother, Stephen Collins, of Fernandina Beach, FL; daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer; her grandson, Bryce A. Rivers; her nephews, Stephen Henderson, Michael Collins; and her niece and Goddaughter, Christine Collins. She is also survived by a host of beloved cousins, family and friends.
A Funeral Mass was held for Carol in Atlanta, GA at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on September 27. A Memorial Service will be held at the Montclair Art Museum on November 8 at 1 PM.
Expressions of sympathy, in the form of memorial contributions to Bennett College, Greensboro, NC or to Sister to Sister of Montclair Mentoring Group are welcome.
