Carol Maurine Shaffer, age 90, died on Sunday, December 28th 2025 at Stormont Vail Hospital.
She was born on March 21st, 1935 in Corning, Kansas to George and Alvina Aeschliman Shaffer. Carol attended rural schools in Nemaha and Brown County and graduated from Fairview High School in 1953.
She attended the University of Kansas, graduating with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1957. Carol received her Master of Music Education from Emporia State University in 1966. She taught music in the public schools at Powhattan, Buhler, Leavenworth, Des Moines, Iowa, and Topeka, retiring in 1995 after 38 years of teaching.
Carol was a member of First Baptist Church in Topeka, a member of Beulah Chapter #34, Order of the Eastern Star, and both the Topeka and Kansas Retired School Personnel. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teachers’ sorority, a charter member of the GFWC Sunflower Club, and a member of the University of Kansas Alumni Association.
Carol enjoyed her retirement years. Being with her family and friends was her first love.
She enjoyed traveling, working on her family genealogy, cooking, crafts, and her annual Christmas Tree Open House.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Blaine Shaffer.
She is survived by her sister, Diane (David) Weatherwax of Colorado, two nieces, Gretchen (Paul) Martin of Illinois and Lindsey (Josh) Ingram of Colorado, two nephews, Gregg (Crystal) Shaffer of Kansas, and Brian (Jessica) Weatherwax of Colorado, as well as her sister-in-law, Jeanette Shaffer of Kansas.
Carol will be laid to rest beside her parents at the Sabetha, Kansas Cemetery.
A memorial service and inurnment will take place at a later date in the spring in Sabetha, Kansas.
