Carol Ann Steward

Carol Ann Steward, 76, of Macomb passed away at 4:33 PM Tuesday February 4, 2025 at McDonough District Hospital. She was born on October 8, 1948 in Macomb to Eldon and Mary (Wright) Small. She married Wayne Steward on December 20, 1969 in Macomb; he survives.
Also surviving is a daughter Jennifer Ann (Steve) Kujawa of Lindenhurst, IL, daughter-in-law Lauren Steward of Glen Carbon, IL; two grandchildren Preston Wayne and Troy Eldon Kujawa; brother James (Linda) Small of Peoria, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Jason Wayne Steward.
Carol worked as a Registered Nurse at McDonough District Hospital from 1969-2014. Her career at MDH began after graduation as a night shift ICU nurse and occasionally helping in the Emergency Department, eventually taking over as the ICU Head Nurse on day shifts. Carol was involved in the planning and moving to the current ICU location on the second floor.
Carol was in charge of Clinical Care Coordination in ICU for 30 years, performing Utilization reviews on ICU and Acute Care patients. She developed and taught a 6-week orientation for all new ICU nurses, served as an ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) instructor, and was PALS certified.
She also worked in the Acute Care and Pediatrics department, and served as the Director of ICU, Acute Care, Pediatrics and Outpatient Infusion Services for 6 years.
Carol served as chairman of the committee that planned and oversaw the building of the Westervelt Home, chairman of the Nurses Retention and Recruitment Committee during the 1980s (recruitment at the high schools and nursing schools), and coordinated and taught the first Paramedic program in the 1970s.
Following her retirement, Carol became an MDH Hospice volunteer and joined the MDH Board of Directors in May of 2019.
Cremation Rites have been accorded. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday February 14, 2025 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, where visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Pastor Don Long Jr. will officiate. Memorials may be made to McDonough District Hospital 525 E. Grant Street, Macomb, IL. Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
