Carol Deliere Obituary
DELIERE, Carol Sue
(Wiley) Yandell Ravenel
Died on July 11, 2025 in Oxford, Florida.
Born November 22, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Ernest Howard Wiley and Charlotte Catherine Miller. The family moved to Miami, Florida when Carol Sue was a young teen, where she attended Miami Jackson Senior High School and enjoyed playing her clarinet in the marching band. It was there that she met her first husband, John Newton Yandell, Jr. and they married in 1954. During their time in Miami, Carol Sue and Johnny were active with the Miami Springs social clubs and Carol Sue was part of the Eastern Air Lines Pilot Wives Club. They started their family in Miami, but moved to Atlanta by 1964 for Johnny's job as a pilot with Eastern Air Lines. Carol Sue and Johnny found new friends in Atlanta and enjoyed entertaining in their home with regularity.
After divorce from Johnny, Carol Sue married James Middleton Ravenel in 1972. He preceded her in death on October 16, 2016. They lived in Buckhead and Roswell of the Atlanta area, where they stayed busy entertaining Jim's Naval Academy alumni friends. Carol Sue loved visiting the Naval Academy in Annapolis and became known as the "cookie mama" to all the Atlanta midshipmen. She baked dozens of cookies and carefully arranged them in tins to present to her "boys" each time she and Jim made the trips to Annapolis.
Throughout Carol Sue's life she pursued creative endeavors in the form of oil painting, home decorating, and innovative cooking. Whenever she wanted employment that did not currently exist, she would create the job and convince employers they needed to hire her. One of her most memorable jobs was running the Atlanta Welcome Wagon Engaged Girl parties, which she hosted at the downtown Biltmore Hotel ballroom, bringing countless quality vendors and sponsors to the program. The parties were a favorite among engaged women and drew hundreds of participants.
When Carol Sue's son, John Michael Yandell, became a Naval Academy midshipman, her life became more full. There were endless trips to Annapolis and swells of pride throughout his career as a Naval Flight Officer. Tragically, he died while flying in the Naval Test Pilot School, July 15, 1986.
The arrival of three granddaughters brought new joy to Carol Sue. She was known as their "Honey" and lived up to every little girl's dream for a grandmother, spoiling and doting on each of them.
After the passing of Jim Ravenel, Carol Sue reconnected with an old family friend from Miami, Robert Deliere, who also flew for Eastern Air Lines. They married on November 22, 2019 and lived in Oxford, Florida until Bob's death 19 January 19, 2023.
Carol Sue was also preceded in death by her loving sister, Veda Ann Browning; and brother-in-law, Carl Leland Browning. Her surviving family includes daughter, Kathleen Yandell Kidd (Bill); granddaughters, Katherine Kidd Kellogg (Doug), Elizabeth Kidd Offner (Dave), and Melissa Kidd Walborn (Ben); and great-grandchildren, Bennett and Isla Walborn, Harrison and Henry Kellogg. Special surviving family are nephews, Mark Leland Browning (Bess) and Dean Wiley Browning (Emily); and niece, Margaret Middleton Ravenel.
