Carole B. Smith

Carole B. Smith, 85, a long-time Ogden area resident, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on February 15, 2024, in West Haven.

 

The youngest of three children, Carole was born November 29, 1938, in Brigham City, Utah to Charles Fenton and Emma Rose Nydegger Rohwer.

 

She married Floyd Lee Barker, and they raised two daughters and later divorced.

 

Carole then married the love of her life, Bernard “Vern” Smith, on July 12, 1978, in Layton, Utah. They had just enjoyed their 45th year of marriage last summer.

 

In her early years, Carole worked as a waitress for Starr Noodle Parlor and George’s Market, and also worked for the United States Postal Service. She also ran Chick’s Café for years. She was not scared of hard work.

 

Carole retired from Hill Air Force Base in November of 1990, as a Personnel Staffing Specialist. She helped internally place handicapped personnel during her career at Hill and also ran the co-op program.

 

She loved reading, watching Olympic Skaters, and thoroughly enjoyed the Kentucky Derby. Carole was very skilled at making porcelain dolls. She enjoyed reupholstering furniture, painting, and watching home redecorating programs. Carole was a skilled seamstress, loved to crochet, and enjoyed hosting parties.

 

Many fond memories were made boating and camping with Vern and the family, and she loved animals – dogs, horses, geese and goats all adored her.

 

Carole will be remembered most for her love of cooking and hosting and was known up in the valley for her Swedish walnut cake, which was often hid in reserve until the very end of an event and much appreciated by those who looked forward to it. A classy and charismatic lady, Carole loved to dress up and look her best. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was armed with a quick wit and appropriate doses of sarcasm. She was loving and caring and concerned for all her family and friends.

 

Carole is survived by her husband, Vern of West Haven; daughters, Terri (John) Dunn, Riverdale; Kim (Garn) Tolsma, Liberty; bonus children, Dennis (Susan) Smith, Liberty; Mark Smith, Oregon; Jae (Calli) Smith, Layton; Curtis (Cindi) Smith, Layton; and Julie (Ted) Jamison, Clinton; 26 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; and her little buddy, Miss Molly.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Elaine Pearson and June Singleton; and three grandsons, Skyler Tolsma, Colter Tolsma, and Gregory B. Wayburn; and by her sweet furbaby, Spike.

 

The family thanks Jennifer and Mindi of Symbii Hospice and Tawnya and Marcia of Visiting Angels for their loving care of our Mom.

 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Ogden. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden.
