Carolina (Lena) was born in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Avellino, Italy, on January 14, 1928 (her actual birthdate was January 11), to Antonio and Maria. She was a devoted wife to the late Gaetano (Tommy) Cona and a loving mother to her children, Joseph (Patricia) and Angela (Joe). She was also a cherished grandmother to her grandchildren, Joseph (Alexa) and Thomas (Sarah).
She was the eldest of seven siblings: Giovanni (Renata), the late Gerardo (Lucy), the late Nicola (Rosaria), Gaetana (Pasquale), Rosa (Nicola), and Camillo (Kathryn).
Carolina was affectionately known as Aunt Lena to 34 nieces and nephews and was a godmother to 18 children.
From a young age, she had a deep sense of duty, love, and faith, acting as a second mother to her younger siblings with grace and devotion.
Carolina married her beloved husband in 1951. Together, they embarked on a courageous journey to America, leaving behind their beautiful mountain town. Gaetano came first, and due to immigration laws, Carolina followed two years later, leaving her family behind. Her journey to reunite with her husband took ten days by boat.
They first lived in Long Island City but a few years later permanently settled in Astoria.
Carolina's dedication to family and faith was evident throughout her life. She found strength and comfort in her relationship with God. One of her favorite verses was John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you." A special part of Mass for Carolina was the Sign of Peace, reminding us that the Lord's peace is with us as she connected with the parishioners of her beloved parish, St. Francis of Assisi.
She was devoted to her children and adored her grandchildren. She often spoke proudly of her large Italian family and how there had always been love and peace among them.
She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of love, forgiveness, kindness, and hard work. She lived a life of grace and compassion, always putting the needs of her family before her own.
She worked outside the home as a seamstress, a candy packer, and for many years making store displays for Robert Rose Inc. in Astoria.
Carolina lived with quiet grace and unshakable strength. She embodied the virtues of sacrifice, devotion, and joy, and her legacy continues in the hearts of those who loved and knew her.
Though her hands are now at rest, the love she gave so freely will echo through generations.
