Carolyn Diane Berry, 73, of Pine Bluff, a loving wife to Richard who she adored and mother to two daughters was called to her Heavenly home on Sunday, August 28, 2022. She passed away peacefully after a health journey that recently became challenging due to the effects of COVID. She had many loves in her life that included her family, her church family, her beloved friends, her students, her volunteer work, and most importantly, her relationship with God.
She was born August 2, 1949 in Star City, daughter of T.L. and Lavetra Petty Boren. She received her early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. Carolyn earned her Bachelor s degree from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and her Master s degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
Carolyn taught career orientation at Watson Chapel Junior High School for almost 20 years, retiring in 1995 due to heart disease. She enjoyed teaching her students about real life occupations and had a positive impact on many.
Post retirement, she became a passionate spokesperson for ARORA (Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency) after her two heart transplants educating nursing students and sharing her transplant story to increase awareness and benefits of organ donation. She served on the board of ORA (Organ Recipient Association). She was also a board member of the Arkansas Donor Family Council and participated in the Transplant Games. Her volunteer work included working with RSVP as a retired senior volunteer.
Carolyn enjoyed playing card games. She also enjoyed traveling with Richard and her friends while seeing all 50 states.
She was a devoted member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as their church organist for many years, Sunday School Secretary, and a youth sponsor.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, James Richard Berry; two daughters, Melissa Davis (Chris) and Meredith Hickerson (Michael); two brothers, Ron Boren (Carolyn) and Randy Boren (Leigh); sister, Kathy Prickett; and three grandchildren, Brandon Davis, Jackson Hickerson and Victoria Hickerson.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2022 with a Celebration of Life to follow at Salem Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Brother Howard Loetscher officiating. Arrangements by Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors (online register: www.RalphRobinsonandSon.com).
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Arkansas Donor Family Council, Audra LaRue, Treasurer, Arkansas Donor Family Council, 8707 Kling Rd, Mabelvale, AR 72103 or the building fund at Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 7226 Sulphur Springs Road, Pine Bluff, AR 71603.
