Carolyn DeMatte Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson Funeral Homes - Bridgeport on Nov. 7, 2024.
After 106.5 years, Carolyn A. DeMatte passed away on October 31, 2024. Formerly of Bridgeport, Ohio, she resided in St. Clairsville, first with family then more recently at Forest Hill Healthcare Center, where she passed away peacefully. She was born on May 4, 1918, to Louis Strauss and Caroline (Supan) Strauss.
After graduating from Bridgeport High School, Carolyn found clerical employment with the Belmont County Probate Court. The courthouse job policy then excluded married women. She was forced to leave that job when she married her late husband, Charles F. DeMatte, on June 21, 1941.
Thereafter, she was a mother and a homemaker, known especially for her fried chicken and her pies. A Catholic by faith, she also volunteered at St. Anthony and St. Mary's Churches. The family enjoyed time with friends at Piedmont Lake. She was a faithful Pirates fan, having attended several games and never missing a broadcast.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, Carole Zarotney, and her sister and brothers; Mary Gertscher, Joseph Strauss and Louis Strauss.
Left to cherish her memory are her son-in-law John Zarotney of DeWitt, MI, her son David (Ellen) DeMatte of Temecula, CA, and her daughter Joan (John) Vavra of St. Clairsville. Carolyn's devotion to her children was exceeded only by her love for her ten (10) grandchildren and twenty-two (22) great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received on Monday, November 11, 2024, at St. Mary Church, 218 West Main Street, St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950, from 9:00 a.m. until Mass at 10:30 a.m., with Fr. Thomas Chillog officiating. She will join her husband in interment at St. Anthony Cemetery in Blaine, Ohio. Wilson Funeral Home 920 National Road Brookside assisting the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church 630 Main St. Bridgeport, Ohio 43912.
