Carolyn Ann McDaniel, 68, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, while surrounded by love. Born on October 26, 1957, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Carolyn was a lifelong nurturer whose quiet strength and devotion to others defined her life.
Carolyn was born to the late Lafayette McDaniel and was lovingly raised by her devoted grandparents, the late Christine R. Pugh and Frederick H. Pugh. She was also preceded in death by her beloved uncle, Alphonso R. Dismond.
She attended E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg and worked various jobs before health challenges led her to disability in the early 1990s. Despite her physical struggles, Carolyn remained resilient, generous, and deeply caring.
Carolyn spent most of her life in Lynchburg before later moving to Oakland, California to live with her son, and eventually relocating with him to Atlanta, Georgia. No matter where she lived, she built community.
She had a special love for children and naturally stepped into a motherly role for many. Beyond her family, she embraced countless young people as her own, offering guidance, encouragement, and care. If you saw Carolyn, there was often a child nearby being looked after, supported, or loved.
She found joy in simple pleasures: long phone conversations catching up on life, trying new restaurants, listening to music ranging from the latest hits to old-school favorites, and watching videos on her tablet. She was also known for her love of sneakers and cherished trips to the mall to pick up a fresh pair. Caring for others brought her happiness even during her own health challenges.
Carolyn leaves to cherish her memory her only child, Jamon McDaniel (Jason McClary); her godchildren, Shamika Johnson, Raquan Johnson, and Shaquan Nottingham; her sister-like Aunt Rosa Dismond; and cousins Melissa Dismond, Melonee Dismond, Marcus Dismond, and Montrez Jones. She also leaves behind an extended family of “children,” relatives, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her kindness.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg Virginia. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg Virginia
Carolyn’s love lives on in the many lives she nurtured.
“Even in the quiet, I always felt your love. I carry it with me still.”
— With love, Jamon
