LANCASTER, S.C. - Carolyn Plyler, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully on Oct. 10, 2025, at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on April 16, 1938, Carolyn was the daughter of the late John Gary Funderburk and Nora Fincher Funderburk. She was also the devoted wife of the late Harold Milburn Plyler, with whom she shared 34 cherished years, building a home grounded in love, faith, and family.
A strong woman of Christian faith, Carolyn was a lifelong and deeply involved member of Bethel UMC before joining First United Methodist Church, where she lived out her beliefs in both word and deed. She was active in many areas of church life, including the Chancel Choir, Morning Handbells, and as a committed member of the United Methodist Women, holding various offices at both the district and local levels. Her faith was not only a cornerstone of her own life but also a light to those around her.
In addition to her church work, Carolyn enjoyed playing bridge with her Lunch Bunch crew, gardening and was a proud member of the Red Rose Garden Club. She found great joy in spending time outdoors and tending to her flowers and plants. Carolyn also loved spending time at the beach. She cherished the peacefulness of the ocean and the special memories made there with family and friends.
Carolyn's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Plyler McDowell; son, Hal Plyler (Marla); her grandchildren, Logan Plyler (Kristin); Abbi Plyler Floyd (Travis); and Lydia Plyler (fiancé Jacob West); Jenna Lambeth (Addison); Adam Walters; and her great-grandchildren, John Paul Plyler and Vann Walters Lambeth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold, and many loved ones who welcomed her home with open arms.
Carolyn will be remembered for her quiet strength, her servant's heart, and her unwavering love. Her legacy of faith and family will continue to inspire all who knew her.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Karen Blackmon, Kisha Clark, Sheryl Febes, and Keevia Blair for their devoted care, compassion, and support of Carolyn. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort and peace to both Carolyn and her loved ones, and their presence was a true blessing.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service was held Monday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Neal Woods and Rev. Charles Phillips. Friends and family were invited to join in honoring and celebrating Carolyn's remarkable life. Burial followed at Lancaster Memorial Park. The family received friends from 10-11 a.m., one hour prior to the service at the church.
