Carrie Herman Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Ever Lasting Life
Anchorage resident Carrie Herman, 95, went to be with the Lord, at the Alaska Native Medical Center on August 17, 2025. Carrie was proud to be Cup'ig Eskimo and shared her family traditions and language. She was born September 15, 1929 in Mekoryuk, AK. The Herman Family built many homes. Carrie resided on Nunivak Island from 1929 to 1969; Bethel from 1969 and then moved to Anchorage with her family in the late 1990's.
Carrie will be buried at the Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery among her family and with her husband Sam. Carrie loved, babysat and surrounded herself with children. She shared memories working at the Norma Jean Daycare. Sam and Carrie opened their home to support Yukon Kuskokwim village patients with temporary housing. She made their home welcoming.
Carrie was a Cup'ig culture bearer and supported her family by selling and trading her Native art to Northstar visiting ships in Mekoryuk. Carrie was a master basket weaver and enjoyed creating traditional Alaska Native Art. She demonstrated and taught skin sewing and basket weaving at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art and the Alaska Native Heritage Center. She enjoyed meeting new people at art sales. Carrie volunteered at several schools teaching headdress, basket weaving, skin sewing and beading. She loved to subsist, being on the water, at fish camp, on the tundra or in the mountains. She enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping and gathering berries and Alaska's bounty.
She was known as 'Grandma Carrie' to many. Carrie was a devoted member of the First Anchorage Covenant Church and the Anchorage Native New Life Fellowship. Carrie will be remembered as a music lover who shined her light for the Lord. While in good health, she and her husband, Sam, provided spiritual counseling to many patients at local hospitals.
Carrie loved her family dearly and each one has had a special and personal relationship with her. She took extra time with each child, grandchild and great grandchild to teach, snuggle and sing. She is proud of her enormous family and encouraged each to do their best.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 22nd at 12:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the First Covenant Church, 1145 C Street, Anchorage, AK 99501. She will be laid to rest following the services.
