Carrie Mathews Jones

Funeral service for Mrs. Carrie Mathews Jones, 92, of Opelika, AL, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church with interment in Garden Hills Cemetery. Rev. Anthony Pogue will officiate. Mask are required.

Mrs. Jones passed away Monday, April 10, 2023, at Magnolia Haven Nursing Home in Tuskegee, AL. She was a member of Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. While actively serving in the church, she was a member of the senior choir, the Deacon's Wives, the Carnation Club, Bethesda Beautification Committee, and the Missionary Ministry. Mrs. Jones also served as chair of the Dr. Johnson Haynes Jr. Scholarship Committee. She was a graduate of East Street High School and Alabama State College. After thirty-five years, she retired from the Lee County School System (1988) as a primary teacher. Following retirement, she remained involved with the Lee County ASU Alumni Chapter, the Lee County Retired Teacher's Association and the Opelika Beautification Committee.

Public viewing will be held Friday from 2-6 p.m., with a family hour at 5 p.m. Her remains will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service.

She is survived by one daughter, Wisteria (Lorinza) Williams of Ft. Mitchell, AL; one son, Tani (Katrina) Jones of Opelika, AL; six grandchildren, Pia Jenkins of Ft. Mitchell, AL, Lorinza Williams II of Montgomery, AL, Cambry Bethel of Denver, CO, Kiandra Jones of Opelika, AL, Aubrey Jones of Birmingham, AL and Caleb Jones of Opelika, AL; one great-grandson, Kevin Hatcher Jr. of Ft. Mitchell, AL; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The Family of the late Charlie Varner, Sr. and Bessie Pace Varner join those who mourn the loss of our good family friend, Carrie Matthews Jones. Carrie and our sister Bettie Jean Varner Williams were classmates from elementary school through college. They also enjoyed association as professional educators in the Lee County School System. Carrie was a regular visitor in our home in Montgomery for many years. She will always be fondly remembered by our family. (The Varner's formerly of 5 Bedell Street, Opelika, Alabama)
