Carrol Daugherty, age 84, born November 20, 1928, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013. Mr. Daugherty was a native and lifelong resident of McIntosh, AL. He was a graduate of Leroy High School and Huffstetler Business College in Mobile, AL. Mr. Daugherty was Mayor of the Town of McIntosh, AL for 42 years and was retired from Building and Trades Union as a Union representative for 17,000 Union personnel from Pascagoula to Pensacola to Birmingham. He served the longest time, 32 years, as the Business Union Representative of Millwright Local 2734 in Mobile, served as Secretary of Carpenters, Millwright, and Pile Drivers, Mobile District Council for 29 years, was President of the Alabama State Council of Carpenters for 18 years and was Administrator and Business Manager for the Mobile-Pensacola AFL-CIO Building Trades Council-Health and Pension Plan for 8 years. He attended McIntosh United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and Board member.
Mr. Daugherty was a staunch supporter of the McIntosh Rescue Squad and McIntosh Police Department. He helped to set up and maintain the McIntosh Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the local Emergency Planning Committee, and helped organize Community Action Panels for Ciba and Olin.
Mr. Daugherty helped organize McIntosh Christian Academy; was one of the founders and board members of Southwest Bank; was a Charter Board Member of Southwest Alabama Health Services in McIntosh, AL; was a Charter member and one of the organizers of the McIntosh Betterment Association; helped establish the McIntosh Public Library Branch of the Washington County Library with the help of his wife, Melva Jean and local industries; and was a former Board Member of the Sheriffs' Boys Ranch.
He was a former board member of Friends of Searcy Hospital in Mt. Vernon, AL; was a board member of North Mobile Community Hospital in Satsuma, AL; was an Executive Board Member of the Port City Council, Mobile, AL; and an Executive Board member of the State Building Trades Council. Mr. Daugherty was appointed by Dr. Fred Whidden of the University of South Alabama to serve as the Secretary of the Charter Board of Prime Health-HMO of Mobile, AL; appointed by Governor George Wallace to serve on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Department of Labor Management Committee; and was a past member of the President's Club under the Carter Administration
Mr. Daugherty was induced into the Washington County Wall of Fame in 2003.
Survivors include his son: Cris Daugherty (Brenda) - Spanish Fort, AL; Daughters: Nancy Jarrell (Ronny) - McIntosh, AL and Jeanine Payne (Raymond) - McIntosh, AL; Siblings: Velma Patrick - McIntosh, AL, Bernice Rocray - Orleans, MA, Betty Milstead - Jackson, AL, Gerald Daugherty - Abbeville, AL, Bonnie McGee - College Station, TX; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a very special friend, Mary Lee Johnson; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Melva Jean Allen Daugherty; parents Hiram and Nona Hilderbrant Daugherty; siblings: Ruth Everette, Helen Touchstone, Marvin Daugherty, Elwood Daugherty.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 16, 2013 at McIntosh United Methodist Church from 12:00 Noon until service begins at 1:30 P.M. with Rev. John Cook and Rev Earl Watson officiating. Interment will be in McIntosh Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the McIntosh Public Library.
