Carter Osterbind, III Obituary

Carter Clarke Osterbind III, professor emeritus at Jacksonville State University, passed away at age 81 from complications associated with melanoma. He was a prolific painter and visual artist whose legacy will endure through his art. Carter grew up in Gainesville, Florida, where his father worked as an economics professor at the University of Florida; he spent his summers with family in Blacksburg, Virginia. A celebrated high school athlete, an injury shifted Carter's path to Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee where he earned a degree in English Literature. After college, he spent three years as a Naval officer during the Vietnam war. While on tour, he was assigned the collateral duty of ship's photographer, which he always credited with turning his attention towards art. After the service, Carter applied to law school but not before taking a few art courses. Those few art courses determined the trajectory of the rest of his life, and he went on to earn his B.F.A., M.Ed., and M.F.A. from the University of Florida. While he was pursuing his M.F.A., Carter met his wife of 43 years, Kelly (MacMillan). They married in 1980 and moved to Jacksonville, Alabama after Carter secured a teaching position at Jacksonville State University. Primarily a painter, Carter also taught drawing, photography and printmaking over his 28 years at the University. Carter often reminisced fondly about teaching and how his students were a constant source of visual interest. Carter was active in the civil rights movement during his college days in Memphis, which he credited with making him a lifelong Democrat. He was a die-hard Florida Gators football fan. He read the New Yorker magazine every week and was a surprisingly good dancer. His cheerful and optimistic disposition made him a kind and patient grandfather. Carter is survived by his wife Kelly, his six children and eight grandchildren: Reilly Kimmerling, her husband Kevin and their children Charlotte, Finn and Henry; Mary Moerlins, her husband Mike and their children Lucy and Jack; Walter Osterbind, his wife Margaret and their children Frances and Louis; Thomas Osterbind, his wife Yanina and their daughter Ruby; Audrey Osterbind and her husband Hayagriv Sridharan; and Sharon Osterbind and her partner Kristen Coffey. Carter is preceded in death by his sisters Rosilie Saffos (1984) and Ellen Jonassen (2013).

A memorial service will be held June 20, 2025 at the Houston Cole Library, 11th floor at Jacksonville State University at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages contributions to the Art Achievement Scholarship at the Jacksonville State University Foundation.

I was a student in Mr. Osterbinds drawing class at Jax State 2002-2003. Being a "know it all" older student , I fussed and complained over having to do what I considered a waste of time beginner drawing exercises. He was adamant but kind twisting my arm to make me do what the rest of the class was doing. I , in spite of myself and my swelled head, learned more from him than any other drawing instructor I'd had before. And he even allowed me to purchase one of his remarkable paintings. Thank you Carter Osterbind. Teacher Extraordinaire.

Carter was a great friend, a fantastic guy, art buddy, running buddy, looked like a movie star, wrote like a famous novelist, painted with great innovation and facility. He loved art and he loved making it! I can't believe he is anything but healthy and happy, I guess it is somewhere on another realm of existence.

Mr. Osterbind was such a calming force during my years at JSU. I was a student athlete, and had so much on my plate, but he and Mr. Gee were so compassionate and helpful that they made my experience the best it could be.

I´m still a designer today, and credit Mr. Osterbind with a lot of my success. He was a great one!!

I just learned about Mr. Osterbind's death. I was writing an essay for one of my teacher education classes and we needed to write about a 'warm demander' -- someone who pushes us to be more than we imagined for ourselves, to set high expectations for ourselves, and to think about ourselves with a growth mindset. I wanted to see what he was doing now, and found this obituary. Mr. Osterbind was a wonderful warm demander who lives on in my memory as a gentle-hearted, funny, warm educator that taught me to see myself as an artist.

I was a student of Mr. Osterbind, and what I most appreciated about learning from him is that he would push you to do your best, not be the best, but to be your best, slow down, take your time and ask questions. He really took the time to help each and every student if they in turn gave their best. I remember going back a few years later and he told me he was using some of my drawings as examples in his classes, which I was honored by. I can´t say enough wonderful words about him, most I have saved as great memories that I will cherish forever! Thank you Mr. Osterbind for impacting so many lives with your life.

My condolences go out to the family. I am confident their loss is hard. I had a couple of classes with Dr. Osterbind while attending JSU and thoroughly enjoyed his pleasant personality and style of teaching. I wish I would have had more classes with him.

Deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the Osterbind family on the passing of Carter. We were colleagues in the arts for many years and I still have fond memories of him bringing the children to trick-or-treat and play with Shae every Halloween when they were small. He touched many lives and inspired many students to grow in their abilities. He fought for what he thought was right and he will be missed by all knew him. With the greatest respect and prayers for the family.
