Caryl Morash

East Poultney, Vermont
Caryl T. Morash, formerly of East Poultney, Vermont, died of old age in the company of her children at GoldenView Healthcare Center in Meredith, NH at the age of 95. Caryl was born on February 23, 1929, in Evanston, Illinois. Her parents were Lt. Colonel Peter N. Martin and Hedwig (Hattie) Martin (Wiltgen). She grew up with three brothers Jim Martin of East Poultney, Vermont, the late Thomas Martin of East Poultney, Vermont and the late Eugene Martin, of Evanston, Illinois. She attended Barat College of the Sacred Heart, Lake Forest Illinois.
While visiting Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire every summer, she met the love of her life, Harvey L. Morash of Alston, Massachusetts and they married on October 6, 1948. They started a family and soon thereafter moved to Poultney, Vermont. Caryl and Harvey had 7 children. Peter L. Morash of South Pasadena, Florida was her first child. In order, she had Therese O. Samson (Michael Samson) of Canaan, NH, Thomas A. Morash of East Poultney, VT, Anne M. Nix (Michael Nix) of Waterbury, VT, Leona M. Schultz (Larry Schultz) of Meredith, NH and James S. Morash (Carol Robb) of Meredith, NH. Caryl also had a seventh child, Irene Morash who died shortly after birth but remained forever part of the family. The family has continued to grow, and she died with memories of her 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Caryl spent nearly all her adult life in Poultney. She worked for many years at the First National Bank of Fair Haven and then in another long career at Williams Machine Company in Poultney. Throughout much of her life she operated the Witches Cauldron antique shop at her home. Her community, like her family was a central focus of her life. Following in her husband's, brother's and father's footsteps she served on the Rutland County Selective Service Board and was a member and past president of the J. Claire Carmody Post 39 American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member and organizer of the Poultney United Way, Mettowee Valley Grange, member and past president of the General Federation of Women's Club in Poultney. She served as a Poultney Town Auditor and Justice of the Peace. Caryl was on the Board of the Lakeland School in Fair Haven. She was President of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at Saint Raphael's parish. Politically, she served on the Town Democratic Committee and served as chair of the Rutland County Democratic Committee.
She cared deeply for her family, friends and town and her family shares in the memories of her life and passions.
