"He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your
suffering.'" - Mark 5:34 (NIV)
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Cassandra Lynn Berry, a beloved wife, mother,
grandmother, sister, and friend, who departed this life on October 17, 2024, after courageously
battling lung disease.
Cassandra was born on August 30, 1967, in Augusta, Georgia, and grew up in Hazlehurst,
Georgia. She graduated from Jeff Davis County High School, where she was an active member
of the marching band and a cheerleader. Following high school, Cassandra attended Valdosta
State University on a band scholarship. It was there that she met and fell in love with her future
husband, Arvin Berry Sr., with whom she would share 36 wonderful years of marriage. Together,
they built a life rooted in faith, love, and dedication.
Lovingly known as "San" by those closest to her, Cassandra was the cherished mother of
Amber Berry Courseault, Arvin Berry Jr., and Carlynn Berry, the proud grandmother of her
precious grandson, Arvin Berry III, and loving mother-in-law of Joey Courseault Jr. Family was
the center of her world, and she took immense joy in being present for life's moments, both big
and small. Her love was felt deeply by all who knew her.
Throughout her life, Cassandra exemplified grace, strength, and unwavering faith, even through
her battles with sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. Despite her
challenges, her spirit remained unbreakable. She never lost her joy, savoring moments spent
dancing, cooking, and making cherished memories with her loved ones.
Cassandra was known not only for her kind heart but also for her impeccable sense of style.
She took pride in her appearance, always dressing stylishly and doing her own hair
beautifully-whether cut short, styled in braids, or worn naturally.
Known for her warm heart and radiant smile, Cassandra was the life of every family gathering.
She delighted in sharing her culinary talents-especially her famous macaroni and cheese,
Italian cream cheesecake, and sweet tea-which became staples at family meals.
She also had a deep passion for sports and was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, her daughter
Amber's alma mater, and the Atlanta Falcons. Cassandra loved trying new restaurants,
especially on trips to Atlanta with Amber and Carlynn.
Cassandra was a faithful servant of the Lord, finding comfort and strength in her faith throughout
life's joys and hardships. She grew up as a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hazlehurst,
GA and later joined Church at Pine Hill in Valdosta, GA where she served as a Sunday school
teacher and member of the kitchen committees. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience,
and joy that will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her.
Cassandra was preceded in death by her grandparents Echols Hill, Onie B. Hill, Henry Mitchell,
and Alberta Mitchell, father Henry Kenzo Mitchell, Mother Carolyn Elaine Mitchell, brother
Kenneth Mitchell, nephew Reginald Mitchell, sister Marva Williams, niece Twyla Kirby, and
cousin and best friend Sonya Julie Fluellen. In addition to her husband, children, and grandson,
Cassandra is survived by her siblings: Clarice Wooten (Cornelius) of Warner Robins, GA; Jean
Christie (Gene) of Thomasville, GA; Joan Givens (Frank) of Hazlehurst, GA; Gloria E. Kirby
(Rueben) of Hazlehurst, GA; Bruce Mitchell of Hazlehurst, GA; Canorise Molly Merritt of
Bluffton, SC; Charles Mitchell Sr. (Kimberly) of Jacksonville, FL; Darrol Mitchell (Katherine) of
Atlanta, GA; Pamela Miller of Atlanta, GA; Johnny Miles (Naundus) of Hazlehurst, GA; Rodney
Hall of Hazlehurst, GA; Marguerite Hill of Hazlehurst; sisters in law Brenda Hardy (Billy) of
Valdosta, GA; Patricia Greene (Angelo) of Temple, PA; and Sharon Berry of Dallas, TX, her
mother-in-law Bennie Louise Berry of Temple, PA, her aunts and uncles: Phyllis Hill of
Hazlehurst, GA; Helen Hill of Hazlehurst, GA; Glenwood Hill (Betty) of Fort Valley, GA; and John
Hill (Mary Ann) of Atlanta, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her memory will
forever be cherished by her siblings, extended family, and countless friends.
A celebration of Cassandra's life will be held at Bennett Tabernacle Holiness in Hazlehurst,
GA, on October 26, 2024, at 2 PM. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the
beautiful life she lived. Following the service, a burial will take place at Hill Memorial Garden,
open to all who wish to accompany her to her final resting place.
