Catherine Epps Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by M. W. Hawkes Funeral Home - Amelia on Jan. 16, 2026.
.Catherine Epps, lovingly known as "Cat" and "Kitty", the daughter of the late Matthew and Carrie Ruffin was born on May 16, 1940. This Queen was a rock that navigated her life's journey with helping hands, compassion and support while exuding love and laughter. If you were ever in her presence, you would never forget her. Catherine fought a good fight, but God saw that she was tired and called her to eternal rest on April 4, 2025. She was born, raised and educated in Amelia, Virginia. Catherine accepted Christ at an early age, becoming a member of Flower Hill Baptist Church. She moved to Richmond, VA but traveled back and forth continuing service and worship with Flower Hill Baptist Church. Catherine stood tall and strong in faith always. Two of her favorite saying were "Don't worry bout the mule going blind" and "keep it in the road". She was a natural at creating words of encouragement and support. In difficult times she often tell you "Hold it where you got it " When in agreement she would say "You got that right" or "ain't it ain't it". Even when things weren't right, she'd make you laugh with sayings like "What time is it" or "excuse me please" As a reference she would say "in this place of business or upon her arrival she would say "what's going on in this place of business" and for explanation mark she would say "Father God"
Catherine spent her career serving others. She was a good cook and believed in feeding you. Catherine spent many years as a short order cook for Grants Department Store and White Tower. Upon their closing, she transitioned into environmental services at St. Mary's Hospital, where she retired from.
Catherine favorite pastime was spending time with family, watching westerns, NCIS and Walker Texas Ranger. She loved good gospel music and would often say "Them thangs hummed".
She was preceded in death by her Beloved grandson Jermone Terrell Epps, known as JT, six sisters: Ophelia Robinson, Josephine Anderson, Alease Murray, Eleanor Lewis, Glady's Clements, Ercelle Ruffin, one brother, Matthew Ruffin, three nephews: Marvin Robinson, Richard Patrick Jr., and Daniel Patrick.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" Daniels (Gregory); granddaughter, Melissa Epps: great granddaughter, Ja'Miya Payne; two great grandson's, Jaymontre "Jay" Garner, Tyquan Garner; two sisters, Fannie Mae Carey, Patricia Ruffin; one brother, Andrew Ruffin (Evelyn); sister-in-law, Gloria Ruffin; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
