Catherine "Cathy" Carroll Petroni, born April 23, 1929 died peacefully in her home at Whitney Center, Hamden, CT on December 5, 2022. She was the daughter of Louise Gorman, a school teacher, and Leo F. Carroll, former State of Connecticut Liquor Commissioner and Lt. in Command of the State Police Troop in Westport, Connecticut. Cathy graduated from Ridgefield High School and St. Joseph's College for Women in West Hartford. She then attended the University of Connecticut's School of Social Work, and went on to have a successful career as a social worker with the Connecticut State Welfare Department, and later, the town of Ridgefield. When her daughters were older, Cathy traveled to Ossining, NY to attend the Maryknoll School of Theology and earned a Masters in Theological Studies.
Cathy was married for 62 years to the Honorable Romeo G. Petroni who predeceased her. Cathy and Romeo enjoyed summers with their family in Madison, Connecticut and fled the cold to spend their winters in Jupiter, Florida. A longtime member of both the Madison Beach Club and New Haven Country Club, Cathy was happiest when in the sun. She leaves behind her three daughters, Carla Solberg and husband Bill of Boston, MA, Elise Kamp of New Haven, CT, and Marissa Coor and husband Sam of Olympia, WA. She is also survived by her sister Jeanne Baker and predeceased by her youngest sister, Nancy Bristol. Cathy was fondly known as "Grandma" to six grandchildren – Abigail Kamp and husband Nate Austin, Marissa Donoghue and husband Sean, Noah Coor, Rees Kamp, Lidia Solberg, and Laura Coor. Cathy is also survived by dear friends Judge Michael Kamp and Kate Rizzo.
Cathy was devoted to her Catholic faith, and attended weekly Mass. She loved being with family and enjoyed time with her six grandchildren. Cathy loved the Metropolitan Opera and read the New York Times daily. An avid and talented needleworker, the homes of her loved ones remain filled with her handiwork. Cathy traveled the world with her husband and close friends. Later in life, she made many memories with her grandchildren at Sea Colony in Jupiter, FL filled with days at the pool and bingo nights.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Whitney Center's memory care unit for the love and kindness they showed our mother. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, December 28th at 11:00am in St. Paul VI Parish at St. Rita's Church, 1620 Whitney Ave. Hamden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sunrise Cafe, 57 Olive Street, New Haven 06511. The Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 424 Elm St. New Haven is in charge of arrangements.
