Obituary of Catherine J. Sarsfield
Catherine Josephine Sarsfield, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Sunday night, October 5, 2025. She was 78 years old.
Cathy was born in Somerville, one of six children born to Charles Parker Gullage and Alma (Lisio) Gullage. She had a wonderful childhood growing up in Somerville and shared a close lifelong bond with her siblings. Family was always at the center of Cathy's life - she and her brothers and sisters made sure to keep that bond strong, gathering often for dinners, cookouts, holidays, and celebrations.
Cathy was a fantastic cook who loved hosting family and friends. Her kitchen was always filled with the comforting smells of home-cooked meals and the sound of laughter. Cathy was known for her famous Italian meatballs and sausages, rigatoni and stuffed shells. Her house would often be packed at the request of this special meal. She created a warm, welcoming home filled with love, support, and encouragement. She celebrated her family's successes with pride and offered steady comfort during life's challenges.
Cathy met her future husband, Matthew Sarsfield, at a New Year's Eve party in 1982. Both had almost decided not to go, but fate had other plans - they met that night and instantly connected. Just six months later, they were married. Cathy and Matt were soulmates in every sense of the word. To bear witness to their relationship was to witness the epitome of true love.
Cathy was a devoted mother who would do anything for her children. Raising her son and daughter was the pride and joy of her life. Though she wasn't fond of flying, she cherished family getaways to Lake Winnipesaukee and Ossipee Lake, where many happy memories were made. Cathy's favorite place to be however, was at home - whether it be out on the back porch lounging in the sun with a cup of coffee, or in the living room surrounded by family; home is where she was happy. Cathy also loved animals and over the years she always had beloved dogs and cats around the house, each one spoiled with her love.
She enjoyed music, especially Country, the Bee Gees, Queen, and Dean Martin.
Cathy had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. The kind of laugh where you couldn't help but laugh with her, even if you didn't know what the joke was. She saw things as "black or white" and had a bit of Italian stubbornness - qualities that made her both strong and endearing. Cathy had a quiet strength about her - and she was a "fighter", even up until the very end.
Above all, Cathy will be remembered for her generous heart, her kindness, and the deep love she shared so freely with her family and friends. She made everyone around her feel cared for and valued, and her legacy of love will continue to live on through all who knew her.
Cathy was the beloved wife of Matthew F. Sarsfield. She was the loving mother of Matthew F. Sarsfield, III of Burlington and Kathryn Sarsfield of Bedford. She was the proud grandmother of Matthew Patrick Sarsfield, Josie Bay Sarsfield, Savannah Leigh Sarsfield, and Aria Maeve Sarsfield. She was the caring sister of the late Carol Stahler of Napa Valley California, Charles Parker Gullage and his wife Patricia of Burlington, Ann Marie Soares and her husband Charlie of Burlington, Veronica Dadmun and her husband Bernie of Ossipee, NH, and Donald Gullage and his wife Karen, of Woburn. She was the sister-in-law of Frank & Mary Hamilton, Robert & Karen Sarsfield, James and Kathy Sarsfield, William & Patricia Ganier, and the late Fredrick & Rita Guthro. Cathy was also survived by a dear cousin Louise Price and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn Street, Burlington on Thursday, October 9 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Services will conclude with a Funeral Service at the funeral home at 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
