Catherine Shaffer, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on December 28, 2025, at her home in
Belgrade, Montana. She was 75 years old.
She was born on February 2, 1950, in Greenock, Scotland-an identity she carried with deep pride throughout her life. Growing up in Scotland shaped who she was: warm, strong, social, and full of heart. As a teenager, she loved dancing, spending time with friends, and working as a hair stylist, already showing her care for others.
She married John Shaffer, a U.S. Navy sailor, and embraced life as a military spouse with remarkable devotion. Together they raised their family during years of moves, deployments, and constant change dedicating over 15 years to Navy life and giving so much to a country that was new to her. Her commitment reflected the depth of her love for her husband and children.
After John's retirement from the Navy, the family moved to Montana. Of all the places she lived, Montana became her forever home. She loved its open spaces, peaceful beauty, and sense of calm. She especially enjoyed road trips such as those to the Bad Lands in South Dakota, camping, rodeos, and time spent at Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, as well as Red Lodge, Montana.
She was known as a kind, sweet, and loving woman-warm, outgoing, and genuinely interested in others. She had many friends because she truly listened and cared deeply. She worked in the Belgrade School system for nearly a decade and built many friendships from her wonderful sense of humor. She loved swimming, socializing, and shopping, and spent many happy hours at the Belgrade Senior Center, where she formed close friendships and a strong sense of community.
As a mother, she was attentive and encouraging, helping her children build friendships and staying actively involved in their lives. She made sure they stayed engaged in activities such as dance, gymnastics, band, swimming, baseball and karate, always supporting their growth and happiness.
She had a remarkable ability to see the positive, even during difficult times. Often, she carried her own pain quietly so others would not feel it-a final act of love that speaks to her selflessness. Her passing was unexpected, and she is deeply missed by all who knew her.
She remained close to her extended family, the McGunnigles, now living primarily in Australia, and she cherished visiting them whether in Scotland or Australia.
Her life was defined by compassion, service to others, and unwavering love for her family.
She is survived by her devoted husband, John Shaffer; her daughter, Heather Shaffer, and her husband, Wally; and her son, Scott Shaffer, and his wife, Janell.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
