Cecil Mays, Jr.

DANTE, Va –

Cecil Mays, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

He was born in Dante, Virginia, the son of the late Cecil Stewart Mays, Sr. and Bertha Poston Mays. He was preceded in death by one sister, Linda "Midge" Mays.

Cecil was a Veteran of the United States Army and of the Baptist Faith. He was an auto worker for General Motors in Pontiac, Michigan, and a coal miner. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and fixing things.

He is survived by his wife, Jewell Colvard Mays; three daughters, Cynthia Mays Steele and Jay of Richmond, Virginia, Amanda Jane Mays of Bristol, Virginia, and Annabeth "Annie" Mays Todd and husband, William II of Alexandria, Virginia; one sister, Carolyn Mays Karrigan of Castlewood, Virginia; several cousins; and his beloved pet dog, Ben.

Graveside Services for Cecil Mays, Jr. will be conducted at 3 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2024, at the Chapel of Love Mausoleum – Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jay Steele and William Todd, II.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Virginia.
