Cecil Roy Walker, born in
Scottsboro, Alabama, was the youngest of five children born to Reverend Tillmon and Lucy Walker. Raised in a faith-centered home as the son of a Baptist minister, Cecil developed a strong spiritual foundation at an early age that guided him throughout his life.
Following high school, Cecil enlisted in the United States Army Special Forces. He was stationed in Germany and Paris and served in combat during the Korean War. Through dedication and leadership, he rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. After returning home, he continued his military service as a U.S. Army Reserve instructor at Tuskegee College while pursuing a degree in Mechanical Industry.
It was during his time at Tuskegee that Cecil met Ethel Lee Stewart. The two eloped just six days after her college graduation on June 15, 1956. They later honeymooned in Paris, France, where they were treated like movie stars. Cecil and Ethel shared 64 years of devoted marriage until her passing in 2020.
A committed father, Cecil encouraged his two sons, Keith and Kenneth, to participate in sports and to compete with determination and integrity. When local Little League teams refused to integrate and include his sons, Cecil took action by organizing and coaching two teams to ensure they and other children had the opportunity to play. He remained a consistent presence at their football games and wrestling matches, never missing a chance to support them.
Cecil was deeply involved in his church, Southeast SDA Church, where he served faithfully in numerous roles including Treasurer, Deacon, Elder, First Elder, Sabbath School Teacher, and founder and leader of Power Hour. He was instrumental in the design of the church building, particularly the choir loft and elevator. He also served as an Industrial Arts teacher at Ramah Christian Academy.
Professionally, Cecil served as Director of Friendly Inn Settlement and, following his retirement, continued working as a Colporteur, architect, painter and a helping hand to all. His commitment to community extended to participation in civic organizations including the Center for Human Services, Centerwood Homeowners Association, and the Council of Churches, among others.
In addition to his service and leadership, Cecil was a talented artist and creative spirit. He painted murals, enjoyed gardening, played the piano, sang, and found joy in listening to gospel music.
His wife Ethel Lee and a son, Dr. Kenneth Roy (Dr. Albertina Walker) preceded him in death. Cecil leaves to cherish his memory a son, Keith Eric (LaVerne), his four grandchildren: Darcel Fanee'; Victor Kenneth (Lanai); Kyle Pruitte (Dr. Katherine Dennis); and Dr. Lilena Marie; one great-granddaughter, Khloe Veronica Dennis-Walker; two goddaughters, Jocelyn Kaye Gilleylen and Deshon Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
