Cecil Walton was born on November 10, 1954 in Longview, TX to I.T. and Delma Devine Walton. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Lee's Chapel AME Church where he taught Sunday School.
Cecil attended East Ward Elementary School and Maggie B. Hudson Jr. High School. Cecil graduated from Longview High School in 1973 where he excelled in football, basketball, track & field, and baseball. Cecil was the first black quarterback for the Longview Lobos. He was known for his speed, toughness, and leadership on the football field. Mr. James Johnson, Cecil's former coach, said, "Cecil was a special man. He never left the field. He played both sides of the ball. He played defensive back and offensive quarterback. He was the best quarterback to ever come through Longview High School. No doubt about it." After high school, Cecil attended Southern Arkansas University on a baseball scholarship. After suffering an injury at Southern Arkansas University, he transferred to Jarvis Christian College.
Upon returning home to Longview, Cecil worked for LeBus International, Inc., Eastman Chemical Company, and Longview ISD. He retired from both Eastman and LISD. Cecil was a well-loved member of the Bramlette Elementary School Staff. He was the recipient of the 2010 Lamplighter Award; an honor bestowed upon school employees who have a special and positive impact on students' lives.
Cecil married Kermit Brown in 1975. To this union, two children were born, Kashanna Mikele Walton and Canesha Nykol Walton.
Cecil was a loving father and a doting grandfather. He loved to brag about his grandchildren to anyone who would listen. He was also an avid fan of all sports, and he could be found watching and discussing sports events daily.
Cecil departed this earthly life on May 16, 2025 at Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, TX surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his father: I.T. Walton and mother: Delma Devine Jackson; brothers: Augustus Woods Jr., Russell Leon Woods, Grady Roscoe Walton, Marvin D. Woods and Roy Lee Walton; sister: Gladys Sanders; Nephews: Geranima Gerrell Walton and Roy Lee Walton, Jr.
He leaves precious memories to be cherished by his daughters: Kashanna Mikele Walton Davis (Allen) and Canesha Nykol Walton Hicks (Gregory); six grandchildren: Cashyla Taylor, Devin Roblow, Donovan Davis, Kendall Davis, Avery Davis and Nykol Hicks; brothers: Chester Walton and Curtis Walton; special niece: Shanequa Hyder Barnes; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends whom he loved dearly.
