Cecilia Mullen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dooley Colonial Home - Westfield on Feb. 5, 2026.
Cecilia J. ("Nibs") Mullen, 90, of West eld, NJ, passed away peacefully with family by her side on February 4, 2026.

Cecilia was born on March 19, 1935 to Edward and Eileen Brady, the second of four children. She graduated from Villa Maria Academy in the Bronx and later earned a B.S. and M.S. in Education from Hunter College. In 1959, she married John Mullen, and together the couple raised their two daughters in New Rochelle and Montauk, NY.

For over two decades, Cecilia was a beloved early childhood teacher in the New Rochelle and Bronxville Public School systems and also served as a workshop leader and mentor to new teachers. In retirement, she continued to pursue her love of teaching as an ESL volunteer and a ten-year volunteer at St. Therese nursery school in Montauk. She also served on the board of the Montauk Village Association. While retirement brought joy, it also brought challenges. For twenty-one years, Cecilia gracefully managed the household and her husband John's care after his Parkinson's disease diagnosis, until his death in 2011.

Cecilia loved Montauk, sunset yoga, water aerobics at Gurney's, walking (her daughters could hardly keep up with her), the New York Times, politics, reading, lobster rolls, cool ocean breezes, and most of all her family. Her greatest pride and joy were her four grandchildren: Will, Patrick, Rob, and Claire.

Cecilia is survived by her daughters, Suzette Mullen of Nyack, NY and Beth Cassie (Scott) of West eld, NJ. She is also survived by her sister Eileen Brady, sisters-in-law Carol McCormack (Kevin), Alice Mary Brady, and Sue Mullen, numerous nieces and nephews, and her grandchildren, Will Harrel, Patrick Harrel, Rob Cassie (Bri), and Claire Cassie (Teddy). She was predeceased by her husband John, her brother Edward Brady, and her sister Anita Penn.

The family will have a celebration of Cecilia's life at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to East End Hospice or the Montauk Village Association.
