Charles Milton Alexander, 82, of Stonewall, passed away peacefully at his home on January 7, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.
Charles was a man whose life was defined by service, integrity, and unwavering devotion to his community. A lifelong resident of Stonewall, he dedicated himself fully to the people and the place he called home. His work ethic and leadership were evident in every role he held, whether in public office, agriculture, business, or his church.
He was a lifelong member of Stonewall Methodist Church, where he faithfully served as Chairman of the Administrative Board for ten years. His commitment to public service spanned decades, including seven years as a Pamlico County Commissioner and an extraordinary 40 years as Mayor of the Town of Stonewall, a position he proudly held at the time of his passing.
Charles was deeply involved in agricultural leadership at both the state and national levels. He was a member and past president of the North Carolina Wheat Association, a board member of the National Wheat Growers Foundation, a director on the National Corn Growers Association Board from 2000 to 2006, and a past president of the North Carolina Corn Growers Association. He was also a proud member of Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl.
His professional career began as a Newport News Shipbuilder from 1961 to 1966, followed by work with Texas Gulf (Nutrien) from 1966 to 1969. In 1969, he founded Alexander Farms, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2015. He also devoted much time, effort, and love into developing the Stonewall Campground, a venture that reflected his passion for hospitality and community.
Charles served as a Director at First Citizens Bank and was a dedicated member of the Pamlico Community College Board of Trustees, serving for more than 20 years. He also served on the Albemarle-Pamlico Economic Development Commission, which played a vital role in bringing natural gas to 20 coastal counties in North Carolina.
Despite his many accomplishments, Charles often said that his greatest achievement in life was raising his family. Being a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather brought him his greatest joy.
Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of many years, Lois Venters Alexander; his parents, Harold and Elsie Alexander; and his cherished grandson, Beau Alexander Ellenberg.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen Killingsworth and husband, Jeff, and Shannon Ellenberg and husband, Brian; his grandchildren, Savannah Alexander and husband, Ben, Tyler Ellenberg and fiancée, Rachel Samuelson, and Hunter Dombrowsky; his great-grandchildren, Benjamin Alexander and Elsie Alexander; his sisters, Ann Holton and husband, Charles, and Barbara Carey and husband, Lester; Stephen Venters and wife, Kesia; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
