Charles E. “Chuck” Barnes, 78, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026. He was the son of the late Broaddus W. and Kathleen B. Barnes, and he was also preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Peggie W. Barnes.
Chuck is survived by two sons, C. Rusty Barnes and wife, Amy and Jason R. Barnes and wife, Lindsay; three grandchildren, Jack Barnes, Berkleigh Barnes and Heath Barnes; two brothers, David Wilson Barnes (Jean) and Francis W. Barnes (Audrey) and sister, Carol W. Jones He is also survived by his beloved companion, Mary Ellen Croshaw. three nephews, Billy Woodruff (Vicki), Duane Woodruff and Jim Barnes (Sara); nieces Tracy B. Hellwig (Hawes) and Kim B. Repak (Andy) and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews; two aunts, Adelle B. Morgan and Ann B. Clay; special friends, Cracker and Dianne Bishop, Delphine Pegram, Selina Andrews, Macarthur Fields; numerous cousins and many other dear friends.
Chuck was a lifetime farmer who had a deep passion for raising tobacco. When he wasn’t in the tobacco field, you could most likely find him on the baseball field. In 1967, Chuck was named player of the year for the Old Hickory Baseball team in the VA League.
After hanging up the cleats, weekends were filled with racing with his two sons. Chuck also loved spending time in the woods deer hunting with family and friends. Papa Chuck was a great man who lived a long and great life with lots of people who loved him.
The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Saturday, February 7 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd, Jarratt, Virginia.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 8 at Concord United Methodist Church, 18591 Concord-Sappony Rd, Stony Creek, VA. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Concord United Methodist Church, 18591 Concord-Sappony Rd, Stony Creek, Virgina 23882.
