Charles W. “Buddy” Barnes, Sr., 75, of Sussex, Virginia passed away on April 11, 2025. Born on November 22, 1949, in Southampton, Virginia, he was the son of the late Waverly Winston and Mildred Parker Barnes. He was preceded in death by grandson, Logan Lastovica, and siblings, Pete Barnes and Anita Berry.
Buddy was drafted and served in the US Army in Korea. Upon return, he worked in trucking and construction for Burgess Trucking, both J. H. Lee and Sons and Harrell Construction, and was the owner of Barnes Auto Transport. There was not a piece of equipment he could not operate nor a wrench he had not thrown while belting out his special melodious chain of words. In his spare time, he was a professional race car driver, both on and off track, as well as a boxer in the pits. He enjoyed his dogs, friends, fast cars, and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
He is survived by his three children, Charles W. Barnes, Jr. (Pam) of Hurley, Mississippi, Lauren Lastovica (WJ) of Carson, Virginia, and David Barnes (Kristen) of Yale, Virginia; two sisters, Ann Kitchen and Ellen Powell (Teddy); sister-in-law, Becky Barnes; six grandchildren, Taylor, Mondo, Carleigh, Ashleigh, Addison, and Vera; eleven great-grandchildren, Liam, Scarlett, Lainey, Landon, Winston, Mondo, Landrie, Jameson, Ruby, Warren, and Layton; two nephews, John and Sean; four nieces, Vicky, Kim, Holly, and Crystal.
