Charles Poole Bishop, born December 6, 1942, in Delhi Louisiana, passed away peacefully at his home in Jacksonville North Carolina on January 5, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Cliffie Mcpherson Bishop and William Henery Bishop Sr., and by his brothers, Billy Wayne Bishop and William Henery Bishop Jr.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Nancy Rhodes Bishop; his sister, Carlyn Heugatter, and brother-in-law, Roy Heugatter; his children, Dale Bishop, Anthony Bishop, Leslie Bishop, and Ashley Bishop; his grandchildren, Kayla Bullard, Hannah Baker, Matthew Bishop, Stephanie Hayes, Kevin Bishop, and Amberlynn Bishop; and his great-grandchildren, Annabell Bullard, Kinsley Collier, Darcy Bullard, Brayden Baker, Emma Baker, Audrey Bishop, and Maddie Bishop.
Charles served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from July 14, 1961, until July 13, 1965, as a heavy equipment operator. Following his military service, he spent much of his working life with Weyerhaeuser Paper Company. During his time there, Charles operated a wide range of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, fire plows, and draglines. Many may not know that he also worked on a cattle ranch in Elizabeth City that was owned by Weyerhaeuser. After several years, he transitioned into a mechanic position with the company. When Weyerhaeuser experienced a major layoff, Charles continued his career working various jobs as a heavy equipment mechanic.
Prior to his employment at Weyerhaeuser, Charles held several other positions throughout his life, including serving as a Jacksonville police officer, driving a bus, and for a short time working as a milkman. No matter the job, Charles was known for his strong work ethic, mechanical skill, and willingness to help others.
In his free time, Charles found joy in the outdoors. He loved spending time in the woods hunting with his children and later enjoyed fishing. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and was known for his kindness and generosity.
Charles often shared the story of how he met the love of his life, Nancy. After transferring to
Jacksonville, North Carolina, from an overseas tour with the Marine Corps, he went into the PX looking for lighter fluid. Unable to find it, he went to the front of the store, where he noticed a woman with the most beautiful blue eyes he had ever seen. She told him where to find the lighter fluid, but when he still couldn't locate it and turned around, she was standing there smiling and pointing it out to him. When Charles returned to the barracks, he told his buddy that he had just met the woman he was going to marry - and he was right. April 3 2026 would have made 61 years of marriage to that beautiful blue eyed girl.
Services will be held at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville on Friday, January 9, 2026. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. A processional will then proceed to Onslow Memorial Park, with a graveside service at 11:00 a.m.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Bishop, Matthew Bishop, Zach Hayes, Ray Jacobs, Garland Yopp, and Jason Walker.
Charles Poole Bishop will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of service, hard work, love for family, and kindness to others will live on.
