Charles Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCorkle Funeral Home - Durand on Feb. 25, 2026.
It is with a warm and affectionate memory that we say farewell to Charles "Chuck" Robert Brown, also lovingly known as Charlie to his nieces and nephews. Charles was born in the bustling city of Chicago, IL on the 19th of May, 1938, and he decided to hang up his hat on the 23rd of February, 2026. A lifelong resident of Northern Illinois, he made his home in Durand, where he was known as a reliable pillar of the community.

Charles had an unshakable spirit that was evident in his work as Fleet Manager at R & D Thiel in Belvidere, IL. His dedication was rewarded by over 50 years of employment, retiring in 2023. But Charles' love for work extended beyond the office. An avid golfer and fisherman, he was also a passionate horse groomer for family horse shows. His hands were rarely still, always eager to support those around him. His generous nature made him a beloved figure in the community, and his dedication to caring for his horses and dogs was a testament to his gentle heart.

Charles was a man of simple pleasures; his family and his work were the center of his world. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 65 years, Sandy, his loyal son Charles, Jr. (Peggy), his loving daughter Sue Bittner, and his cherished grandchildren Brianne Legge (Patrick), Jessica Brown, Brittany Ray (David), and Brenna Saltzman (Austin); 5 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ida Brown, his sister, Nancy, and his half-brother, John Gustavson.

To celebrate Charles' life, we invite you to share your memories and upload your favorite photos of him on his memorial page. Let's remember Charles as he was – a spirited, supportive and generous man whose love and reliability have left an indelible mark on our hearts. His memory will continue to inspire us, reminding us of the love and joy he brought into our lives.

A memorial visitation will be held at McCorkle Funeral Home-Durand Chapel, 101 Main St. Durand, IL from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. on Saturday March 14, 2026. A Celebration of Life will be held at Cimino's Pizza Restaurant, 407 North Center St. Durand, IL from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
