Charles Edmund George, a resident of
Acton, MA since 1964, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the
Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln. He was ninety-two years old. He was the beloved husband of Eleanor (Rieg) George for sixty-four years.
Charles was born in Stoneham, MA, the son of the late Seldon and Adeline (Heath) George. The family resided in the Wollaston area of Quincy. As a teenager, he worked during his summers at Camp Allen, Perkins School for the Blind in Bedford, NH. A veteran of the Korean War, Charles served honorably in the U.S Army. He was a graduate of the Franklin Institute, where he received a certificate in Graphic Arts. Charles (Charlie) and Eleanor (Ellie) married on September 9th, 1961, in Athol. They started their married life in Wollaston, later moving to Acton in 1964, where they raised their two children.
Before their children were born, he enjoyed performing as Santa Claus, delivering gifts on Christmas Eve to the children of the Nash Road neighborhood. Charles was a dedicated and loyal employee of EG&G in Waltham for thirty-five years, where he worked as a Technical Illustrator and Art Director in the Publications department. He treasured his connections within his small but close group of co-workers.
Charles was known as a man who could design, build, and fix anything involving woodwork, which his family always appreciated. He built numerous bookshelves for the Citizens Library in West Acton. But his proudest accomplishment by far was building his own cabin in the woods of Lovell, Maine, in the 1970s. Some of his happiest moments were spent at his cabin. There, he was content working in the woods for hours, sitting on his porch, where he would "watch the pine needles fall.", being on Kezar Lake, teaching his children to fish at nearby Cold River, and spending time with his aunts and uncles (the Buzzells and the Hulls). He treasured watching a family of phoebe birds who would return year after year to nest and raise their young on the porch he built. Nothing made him happier than generously and proudly sharing his beloved cabin with family and friends. He especially loved attending the annual Fryeburg Fair in Maine every year, a tradition he honored since spending his childhood summers at his Aunt Irene and Uncle Francis's farm in Fryeburg. Charlie was an avid lifelong stamp collector; this hobby spoke to his artist's eye and brought him hours of contentment. His particular interest was collecting and cataloging US, Canadian, and British Isles postage stamps and ephemera. He loved attending stamp conventions with treasured friends. Over the years, Charlie and Ellie enjoyed three happy trips to England, a cruise to Alaska, and trips to Nova Scotia, California, Colorado, and New Mexico. He loved taking fishing trips both in Maine and Canada. He had a particular interest in WWII history, having lived through that era as a child. Upon his retirement from EG&G in 1993, he worked with a good friend in a part-time handyman business for several years. He found much happiness in golfing with friends at the Chelmsford Country Club, walking daily, reading, watching movies, and collecting model cars.
Charlie was a lifelong Episcopalian and an active member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Acton. He and Ellie attended the very first service held at the church in 1964. There, he found community, comfort, and purpose as a dedicated parishioner. There, he contributed for years to many of the church's needs; ushering, greening of the church at Christmas, counting weekly offerings, the Thursday night cleaning crew, and countless other mission-based charitable activities. Charles was dedicated to his family as a husband to his wife, father to his children, as a loving grandfather, and as a son and brother. He was a loyal friend, an honest man, an extremely hard worker, and a gifted graphic artist. He had a sense of humor that all who knew him will remember fondly.
Charles is lovingly survived by his wife, Eleanor R. George of Acton, and his two children, Susan L. George of Lancaster and Matthew D. George and his wife, Lisa (Dixon) of Littleton. He was the loving grandfather of Matthew, Hailey, and Alexandra. He also leaves behind his beloved sister, Dorothy Carol Glass, and brother-in-law Charles B. Glass of Walnut Creek, CA, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews around the globe. He was predeceased by his sister, Alicia A. (George) Seavey, and brother-in-law John M. Seavey of Hingham, MA
Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, September 28th, from 2:00-5:00 PM at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Avenue (Rte. 111), Acton. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 29th at 11:00 AM in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 164 Newtown Road, Acton. Burial will be private.
