In Loving Memory of Charles Edward Grady, Jr.

Charles Edward Grady, Jr., a lifelong resident of New Haven, Connecticut passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 2, 2026, while sitting in his favorite chair and wearing his beloved UConn Husky hat.
Charles dedicated his life to public service with the New Haven Police Department, beginning his career in 1956. Through unwavering commitment and exemplary leadership, he rose through the ranks from Patrolman, Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Deputy Inspector, ultimately retiring as a highly decorated Captain in 1999. His pioneering spirit and deep compassion made him a pillar of community policing, earning him admiration and respect from both colleagues and the community.
Following his retirement, Charles continued to safeguard his city as the Director of School Security for the New Haven Board of Education. His calm presence and guiding hand reassured countless students, educators, and families. He retired from the Board of Ed in 2010.
Charles was preceded in death by Jackie Grady, his cherished wife of 60 years and his son-in-law, James Hodge.
He leaves behind a loving family, daughter, Yvette Hodge; sons, Charles K. Grady and Todd E. Grady; daughters-in-law, Cheryl Grady, Aleshia Grady-Murray, and Yvonne Lopez; grandchildren, Yvette Wilson, Jayson Hodge, Christina Grady, Genesis Grady, Madison Grady, Sydania Grady-Murray, Charlee Grady, Makhi Grady, Annand Grady, Kayla Murray, and Amara Lopez; great-grandchildren, Jaiden Grady, Bali Grady, Sage Grady, and Alaïa Grady; and a host of loving family and friends.
His greatest joy came from helping to nurture his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, shaping their lives with wisdom and love.
Remembered as "a giant among men," Charles' legacy endures through the lives he touched, the community he shaped, and the family he adored. His sense of calm and kindness resonated with everyone he met. He was truly an angel on earth, and his legacy will live on forever.

I can't think of a single person who ever expressed an unkind comment about Captain Grady. He was a special person with/for whom I was honored to work. Rest in peace, Sir.

I am so so sorry to hear that your Dad has passed. From everything you had told me and all I´ve read about him, your father was a remarkable man - generous, principled, and deeply respected. His service, integrity, and kindness left a lasting impact on so many. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts during this difficult time.
