Charles Edwin Herr, age 90, of Centerville, passed away Thursday October 29, 2015 at Centerville Nursing and Rehab in Centerville. Charles Herr was born in Plano, Iowa to Vern and Alma Herr on August 17, 1925. He attended school in Plano and Centerville. At 17 he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Seabees during WWII. He served in New Zealand and other islands in the area. After returning to Iowa he married Marilyn Exline. They later divorced. From their union, they were blessed with two daughters, Linda and Diann. On Christmas Eve of 1953, Charles married Lois Brockert in Muscatine, Iowa. They were married over 50 years. First, residing in Davenport Iowa and later in Centerville, Iowa. From this union they were blessed with a son Kurt. Charles worked at a number of manufacturing jobs both in Davenport, and Centerville. His last employment was with Levine's Culvert Co. He loved working in his garden. And was quick to share the bounty of the garden with family, friends and neighbors. Charles is survived by his daughters Linda Hadley of Cedar Rapids, and Diann Herr of Centerville, his son Kurt (Diane) of Centerville; A sister Margaret Kaprich of Ankeny; six grandchildren, Kelly (Mike) Bohning of Olathe, Kansas, Jason (Amy) Hadley of Scottsdale, AZ, Kurt (Ricki) Herr Jr. of Centerville, Courtney (Greg) Farber of Eldridge, Dawn (Dave) Graber of Tiffin, and Jamie (Shawna) Lewellen of Centerville. Charles loved spending time with his grandchildren, and the time he got to spend with his nine great grandchildren. He enjoyed seeing video and pictures of his Great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Lois; two brothers, Glenn Herr and Vern Herr Jr. and his granddaughter Heather Herr. Funeral services will be held at Lange Funeral home in Centerville, on Sunday, November 1, 2015 at 2PM. Burial with military rites will follow at Island Cemetery in Fruitland, Iowa on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service, Sunday from 1-2PM. Memorials have been established to the family of Charles Edwin Herr and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home 1900 South 18th Centerville, Iowa 52544.
