Charles Manion Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Mar. 23, 2026.
Charles Edward "Chuck" Manion, 92 of Salisbury passed away on March 10,2026. Born on August 26,1933 in Flushing NY, he was the son of Marshall J. and Esther Gooden Manion. They soon moved to Arlington, VA, where Chuck spent his youth.

Chuck was known for his kindness, friendliness and sense of adventure.

As a youth, Chuck saved his paper route earnings to buy his mother a used violin. As an adult, he loved making pancakes and ice cream, as well as carving pumpkins and dressing up for Halloween with his kids and grandkids. Chuck was always ready to take kids biking, fishing or waterskiing and was always available to drive kids to swim practice and meets.

During the Korean conflict Chuck was in the army airborne and trained as an army paratrooper. He later obtained his private pilot license. Chuck also enjoyed "flying" down double black diamond ski slopes and scuba diving. He loved canoeing and camping, especially in the Minnesota Boundary Waters with his sons. He was an active member of the YMCA and enjoyed the camaraderie there, as much as the exercise. During quieter times he played the guitar and the game of bridge. He had a deep appreciation for American history, which he enhanced through reading and travelling to historic sites with his wife, Terry. He and Terry took many a "magical mystery tour" up and down the east coast, to Milwaukee, to Alaska and to multiple locations in Canada. Chuck never tired of exploring new places. Above all, Chuck valued time with his family, including his fur babies.

After he studied physics on the GI bill at Virginia Tech, he began a long career with NASA; first at Langly, VA then at NASA Wallops, where he oversaw the building of sounding rocket payloads, which he took around the world to launch. He was even required to build a range to launch them in Peru. At one point in the 70's, Chuck was the NASA liaison on a Soviet ship stationed off Wallops. After his retirement from NASA, Chuck was a Realtor at ERA Martin Associates. He loved seeing new places and making new friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph M and Annelle B. Manion, his sister Anne Manion, his nephews Timothy and Scott Fulton and first wife Maeve Q. Manion.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Millea Manion, his children, Stephen J Manion (Linda Miller), Jeffrey A Manion( Kristen Steffens), Deirdre E Manion and Charles J. Manion, his bonus daughters, Carly Banks (Brian) and Julie Garner(Wess) , grandchildren Rachel and Sarah Manion, John and Summer Banks, Wessman and Cara Garner, his sister, Eilleen Fulton, his brother-in law and sister-in- law James Millea and Mary Ellen Bresciani and beloved nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at 2PM at Holloway Funeral Home at 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury MD with visitation from 1PM to 2PM.
