Charles Mashburn Obituary

Charles William Mashburn, formerly of Rex, GA, passed away on Saturday, April 19th, 2025, at the VA Hospital in Birmingham, AL.

He was a resident of Rex for over 47 years. He moved to Alabama in March 2023 where he resided in Hoover.

An avid lover of old country music, he loved to play his guitar and sing. He proudly served in the Korean War in both the Army (as a Truck Driver) and the Air Force (as a Radar Operator). He was one of the best storytellers to listen to.

He loved his mother, his wife, his kids, and his country beyond measure.

He was preceded in death by his soulmate, Delsie Lee Duckett Mashburn; son, Billy Raye Mashburn; daughter, Vikie Escobedo; grandson, Shawn Raye Mashburn; granddaughter, Kristen Rochelle Moore; parents, James Leonidas Mashburn, Sr. and Mary Ruth England Mashburn; brother, James Leonidas Mashburn Jr.; and sisters, Jeanette Schmidt and Phyllis Baughn.

His legacy is left to his survivors: daughter, Tracey Lee Mashburn Camp (Alan); grandsons, Devon Mashburn (Leah), Charles Sanders Camp, Michael Curtis William Moore (Kat), and Carlos Escobedo; granddaughter, (let's face it - she was the favorite) Alana Lee Camp Kirkley (Eli); seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He is also survived by his sisters, Doris Speakman and Carolyn Beavers along with many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life was held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at John's Ridout in Trussville, AL at 11:00 a.m. with a gathering of friends and family afterward until 3 p.m.

Because he thought they were more beautiful in their natural habitat, in lieu of sending flowers please donate in his honor to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

He adored the children of St. Jude's and admired their strength and courage. He always enjoyed getting pictures of the children he was helping. Each one was placed on his refrigerator where he could see them every day.

I KNEW CHARLIE IN CUTTHROAT ISLAND, AIR FORCE RADAR STATION. MY WIFE AND I VISITED HIM MANY YEARS AGO AT HIS HOME. I WOULD LIKE TO OBTAIN AN ADDRESS FROM ANY ONE OF HIS CHILDREN SO I CAN SEND A FEW ITEMS ABOUT THE ISLAND, ONE OF WHICH IS WHAT HE WROTE ABOUT HIS MEMORIES OF CUTTHROAT ISLAND IN LABRADOR. I ALSO HAVE A PICTURE OF HIM IN THE 1958 TIME WHEN HE WAS THERE. SAD TO LEARN OF HIS PASSING AND WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM AS A GREAT GUY. PLEASE COMMUNICATE TO ME. Joe Gagliardi
