Charles May Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Britton Funeral Home on Jan. 19, 2026.
Charles May, 82, of Richmond, IN, passed away on January 18, 2026, at Saint Joseph Hospital in London, KY. Born on March 2, 1943, in Manchester, KY, Charles moved to Indiana at the age of 16.

Charles was a man defined by hard work, dedication, and a deep love for the land. He spent much of his life working and farming, finding purpose and peace in early mornings, long days, and honest labor. Farming was more than a job to him; it was a way of life. Known for his strong work ethic, Charles believed in doing things right and never steered away from hard work. He worked and retired from Johns Manville after 35 years.

Charles was a devoted father to Charlene May Spivey; Mary Carol Farler and husband Lonnie Dale; Gary Vadakin and wife Heidi; and Angela Crane. He is survived by his beloved ex-wife, Phyllis May, whom he loved dearly and who remained by his side until the end. He was blessed with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including a special grandson, Timothy Mills, who lovingly cared for him in his final days.

Charles is also survived by his siblings: Earnest May; Rosie Eversole (late husband Frank); Sarah Buchanon and husband Jeff; and Harrison May and wife Angela. He was preceded in death by his parents, General May and Laura Davis May; his siblings, General "Junior" May and wife Doris, Kathleen Wagers, Irene Davidson, Rilla Horton, Willie May and wife Ima Jean, TJ May, Vernon May, and Barbara Ann May.

Charles's memory lives on in the fields he worked, the values he passed down, and the many lives he touched. He will be remembered as a hardworking man who loved farming, family, and the simple, honest life.

Visitation will be held at 4:00 PM on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Britton Funeral Home. The memorial service will follow at 8:00 PM, officiated by Bobby Mills.

Charles May's legacy of love and dedication will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
