Charles Oster Obituary

Charles Vernon "Chuck" Oster, 84, of Penn Laird, VA, peacefully entered the presence of his Lord on August 4, 2025, after a long productive life. He was born May 12, 1941, in Cumberland, MD to the late Estel V. and Dorothy V. (Bender) Oster.

On July 31, 1965, Chuck married his beloved wife, Lois M. (Jones) Oster who passed away on April 17, 2020, celebrating almost 55 happy years of marriage together.

He is survived by one son, Stephen S. Oster of Cambridge, NY, and one daughter, Lynette E. Long and husband, Keith of Penn Laird, VA; grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Katherine, and Colleen Oster, and Justin (Fiona), Nathan, Matthew (Isabelle), and Rebekah Long; and one great-grandchild, Aurora Joy.

Chuck was a 1959 graduate of Allegany High School, Cumberland, MD and a 1962 graduate of Strayer College of Accountancy in Washington, DC. He held positions with the National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors and GEICO Insurance in Washington from 1962-1973. In 1997, he retired from the Frederick Division of Washington Gas Light in Frederick, MD after 24 years of faithful employment. While living in Frederick, he was a member of Civitan and a founding member of the YMCA's International Management Council.

Chuck was a charter member of Emmanuel Alliance Church in Frederick, MD and was instrumental in the founding of the church where he was a member of the board and served as treasurer and financial secretary.

Chuck enjoyed traveling and camping. He took great pleasure in expertly planning trips for family and friends. Before the days of GPS, Chuck kept maps of various states in his desk and aided coworkers in planning their own trips as well.

A joint memorial service will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025 at 1 p.m. to honor the memory of both Chuck and his late wife Lois, with a viewing preceding the service beginning at 12 noon. The service will be held in the chapel at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Following the service, there will be a short graveside committal service at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Chuck & Lois Oster may be made to Summit Grove Camp & Conference Center, 140 S Front Street, New Freedom, PA 17349.
