Charles Reid Porter, 75, of Reidsville, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Moses Cone Hospital.
A family graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Evergreen Memory Gardens followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church with Dr. Lance Cole officiating. The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the home.
Reid was born in Mebane, NC to the late Charles Reid Porter and Elizabeth Porter Holt. He graduated from King College with a bachelor’s degree and years later went back and attended night school to facilitate a career change into computer programming. Reid started his family and worked various jobs in Orangeburg, SC before moving to Reidsville, NC in 1988. After moving to Reidsville he was employed with Karastan in their IT department for 15 years until a company layoff created an opportunity for a career change to the Department of Social Services where he worked until his retirement. He was a longtime active member at First Baptist Church, where he enjoyed singing with the New Inspirations, served on various committees, was a former deacon and member of the Dot Apple Sunday School Class. Nothing gave him greater joy than watching his children and grandchildren play sports. Many hours were spent on bleachers cheering them on and on “The Hill” watching practice. He was often identified by his big smile, his easy laugh, and his friendly interest in everyone’s lives. He spent many hours planning, remembering, and dreaming about his yearly trips to the beach and the mountains to play golf with his brothers and close buddies. And he’d better show up with that pound cake!
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mason Riggs Porter; children, Charles William “Chuck” Porter (Samantha Balsam) of Charlotte, NC, Joseph Reid “Joey” Porter (Jennifer), and John Mason Porter, all of Reidsville; grandchildren, Will, Liya, Hensley, Aislynn and Landry Porter; brothers, Bill Porter (Beth) of Lake Oswego, Oregon and Steve Porter (Renee Golian) of Youngsville,NC.
