Our family's loving Patriarch Charles "Ray" Doty passed away from natural causes June 30, 2023 at Village Health Care. Dad was born February 25, 1930 in Willow Creek MT. He lived in Butte until he was 7, then moved to Missoula with his parents Virgil G. & Ethel (Walbert) Doty. He graduated from Missoula County High School in 1948. On June 16, 1951 he married his high school sweetheart Gloria E. McDonough, a marriage that would last until Feb. 11th, 2021 when Gloria passed from Alzheimer's.
Dad was a proud patriot. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 until 1953 during the Korean conflict. Among his proudest accomplishments, he joined the Missoula Police Department in 1957, served in many capacities including Juvenile Officer and retired as Captain of Uniformed Officers in 1977.
Dad & Mom loved traveling the world for a number of years, later volunteering for the Alzheimer's Walk, Missoula Marathon & many more causes and interests. Dad was a member of the Color Guard & Commander for the American Legion. He was a big Griz. fan, and attended all Men's and Women's basketball games as long as he could.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, his parents, & his brother Bob. He is survived by his sons Michael, Patrick (Patty), daughters Penny (Gary), Sharon (Charlie), along with 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and wonderful sister-in-law Margaret Doty.
We will never forget the love provided by Lena, Tami, Wendy & Gwen at Grizzly Peak Retirement Homes and the amazing staff at Village Health Care, Pearl Section. A grateful thanks to Fe, Ashley, Gerard, Jessica J., Marielle, Sydnie, Carrie and many many more. Also thanks to Susan Reneau, who helped him participate at police and 9/11 ceremonies. As a tribute to Dad we hope you'll always show love and support for our country's military and law enforcement.
Join the family of "Ray" and Gloria Doty for a military honor ceremony, open to the public, at The Missoula Veterans Cemetery, on Tower Street near Big Sky High, on Friday, August 11th, at 3:00. The Celebration of Life will be the following day, Saturday, August 12th at 11AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Missoula (235 S. 5th St. West). A potluck will follow the Celebration.
