Charles "Chuck" Ruppert 91 of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, at the Salem Hospital.
Charles was born in Buck Run, West Virginia to Charles and Lottie (Kraus) Ruppert. His siblings included Lawrence, Elizabeth, Mark, Tom, and Theresa.
Chuck was very active in his lifelong Catholic faith and served his parish of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem for many years. He delighted in setting up each day for the service, administering communion, and serving for the Mass.
Chuck served in the U.S. Army from 1948 until his honorable discharge in 1952. He married Susie Frerer in October of 1952. They remained married until Susie's death on October 2, 2019. They had been married for 66 years. He worked at a variety of jobs including barbering, gas station owner, and finally as an industrial engineer. One of Chuck's great loves was flying. He delighted in obtaining his pilot's license to fly a single engine plane. He was also an accomplished carpenter. He made many furniture items for his home including a roll top desk, grandfather clock, bookcases and many other items.
Chuck and Susie had one daughter, Rebecca, who was the joy of their lives. Rebecca lives and works in Salem, Oregon as a registered nurse.
Chuck will long be remembered for his strong work ethic, his intense Catholic faith and for the many talents he possessed.
His daughter Rebecca wrote this remembrance to honor her dad:
"Dad was amazing. He was such a talented man. His faith was strong, and he put his faith into action. When his wife, my mother, Susie died, Dad rose to the occasion and became my confidant and best friend. Dad was there for me as I was for him. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved you Dad and will continue to love you."
