Charles Edward Sayles, age 88, of Detroit, Michigan, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025. He was born on February 4, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan to Arthur and Telma (Grimm) Sayles. After graduating from high school, Charles proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years. Following his military service, he pursued higher education and earned an Associate's degree from Madonna University. His career ultimately led him to the Taylor Township Fire Department, where he dedicated over 30 years of his life, retiring as Battalion Chief. In his younger years, Charles worked at the Arthur Murray School of Dance and quickly discovered a love for dancing. He and his wife Martha Whitehead would often clear the dance floor with their impressive moves. Charles also enjoyed golfing at the local courses in Taylor, finding relaxation and fun on the links. Above all, Charles valued his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his devotion to his loved ones was his greatest joy.
Charles' passing was preceded by that of his parents: Arthur and Telma Sayles; and siblings: Al Sayles and Imgene Writer.
To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving wife of 65 years: Martha Sayles; Daughters: Cindy (Diamond) Basnaw and Cherri Sayles; Grandchildren: Jessica, Amanda, Diamond and Jade; Great-grandchildren: Carter, Payton, Christian, Lincoln, Heidi, Leo, Jasper and Everly.
Charles's kindness, dedication, and warm spirit will be missed by all who knew him. No public services are planned at this time. Cremation will take place through Serenity Crematory in Taylor.
