He was a man whose presence filled every room - steady, warm, and impossible to overlook. With his unmistakable handlebar mustache and a cigar or pipe often in hand, he carried a style and confidence entirely his own. He never met a stranger; whether you knew him for years or only a moment, he made you feel welcome with a story, a laugh, or a bit of good-natured teasing.
Chuck was born on December 14, 1939 to Charles and Ann (Kump) Scoma. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Loebach, on August 5, 1961, beginning a partnership marked by devotion, humor, and deep loyalty. Chuck loved his family fiercely and enjoyed sharing his life lessons and advice with his daughters and grandchildren.
He shared his home and heart over the years with his three dalmatians (Prince, Gypsy and Molly), and many cats that found their way into his life, each one loved and cared for with the same devotion he showed the people around him.
Chuck had a lifelong connection to Calumet, Michigan - his mother's hometown and a place that lived deep in his heart. His annual trips north were filled with the people and traditions he cherished most: time spent with family; fly fishing in the quiet beauty of the Upper Peninsula; and giving everyone a hard time in the way only he could.
A man of many passions, Chuck was a boxer in high school, a skill that reflected his grit and determination. He loved building and riding motorcycles in his younger years, finding freedom and joy in the hum of an engine and the open road. He also enjoyed hunting, embracing the peace and challenge of the outdoors.
Chuck dedicated 30 years of his life to Caterpillar, including a decade as an elected UAW Union representative. He believed deeply in fairness, dignity, and looking out for the people beside him.
He leaves behind a legacy of humor, strength, and love-stories that will be retold for years, laughter that will echo in memory, and a spirit that will continue to shape the lives of those who knew him.
Survived by his wife, Betty Scoma; two daughters, Diane Scoma (Scott Znaniecki) and Sue (Michael) Carter; five grandchildren, Hannah & Sarah Scoma, Joshuah and Leah Carter, and Danica Scoma; one great-grandson, Christopher Scoma; one brother, Jerry (Sally) Scoma; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Paul) Scoma and Mary (Fran) Scoma; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and Fran Scoma; and his son-in-law, Michael Carter.
