Over the years, he served on several boards including USD# 235 School Board at Uniontown, Ks., Bourbon County Farm Services Board, and the Fort Scott Rural Water District #2 Board. He was also a member of the Walnut Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie; his brothers, Richard Henry Shireman II and John "Jack" Shireman, and his parents.
