Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith-Carson Wall Funeral Home - Girard on Oct. 6, 2025.
If heaven has a kitchen, there's no question that the smell of fresh baked bread and the taste of
homemade ice cream just got a little stronger.
Myrna L. Hershberger, 95 years young, of
Girard, Kansas, passed peacefully into eternity on
October 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that stretched far beyond
her years. Born in Hennessey, Oklahoma, on January 28, 1930, to Joseph and Ivah Kious, Myrna
grew up with a heart for people and a knack for weaving simple moments into cherished
memories.
She was wed to her love, Vernon Hershberger, On September 20, 1950, and together they built
a life rooted in faith, family, and community. Their home was never just a house; it was the
heartbeat of the family. On their farm, Myrna hosted countless gatherings filled with laughter,
good food, and what many would argue was the world's best homemade ice cream. (No one ever
dared challenge her on that title.)
A nurturer by nature, Myrna spent many years running the Girard Senior Center, where she
made it her mission to ensure no one went without a good meal or a kind word. Her dedication
earned her community recognition, but she never did it for the accolades. She did it because
caring for others was simply stitched into her DNA. Whether she was coordinating holiday
dinners for the Sheriff's Department, feeding emergency service providers, or quietly checking
on a neighbor in need, Myrna lived her faith in the most practical, profound way: through love in
action.
After 95 remarkable years of service to the world, Myrna traded her apron strings for angel
wings and reunited with her beloved husband, Vernon, and their son, David Hershberger.
She is survived by her son Fred (and Treasa) Hershberger of Greenwood, MO; daughters
Marilyn (and Steve) Ricketts of Edgerton, MO; Shirley Hershberger of the home; and Donna
(and Steve) Long of Pleasant Hill, MO; as well as nine grandchildren and sixteen great-
grandchildren who will forever carry her spirit forward.
She will be remembered for her quick wit, unwavering generosity, and the quiet strength that
comes from a life well-lived and well-loved.
Heaven gained a steward of goodness, but those who knew her best will tell you, she never really
left. Her love lingers in every shared meal, every laugh around the kitchen table, and every act of
kindness executed in her honor.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Pastor Rick Prideaux officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m., until service time on Wednesday.
Memorials are suggested to the Girard Senior Center and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
