Charles “Steve” Virgil Stevens, 94, passed away from complications from pneumonia on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Steve was born on April 23, 1930, in Rochelle, Georgia to the late Guy and Minnie Pearl Stephens. He attended and graduated from Wilcox County High School. Steve grew up hardworking on the family farm. Before he turned 18, he ran away from the farm to join the military, going as far as to change his surname from Stephens to Stevens in hopes his father wouldn’t find him. Unfortunately for him, his plans were foiled by his dad who came and got him, making him work for one more tough year on the farm before he enlisted legally. He joined and honorably served in the United States Army for 23 years, serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. During his service, he received many prestigious awards along the way, including skilled marksmanship, and eventually retiring as a Sergent First Class in procurement. From there, he worked for Grant’s Department Store and Kmart selling appliances for both. Eventually he’d return to working in procurement on Robins Air Force Base as a civil servant until his retirement.

While stationed in England, Steve met his wife, June, at the local movie theater where she was the ticket taker. He kept returning to see her until he finally asked her on a date, enjoying over 73 years of marriage together. Steve loved being a grandfather and great-grandfather, his grandchildren being his pride and joy. In his free time, he enjoyed a variety of interesting hobbies. He loved gardening, especially tomatoes and squash. He enjoyed doing yardwork and piddling around in his workshop. He was a good man who was known for his fun sense of humor and telling jokes whenever the opportunity arose.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by two of his children, Susan Stevens Reinhardt and Robert Neil Stevens.

His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, June Cooper Stevens; children, Sallyann Stevens Clements (Glen) of Macon and Sandra Peck of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Sarah Reinhardt, Kaylie Brown (Taylor), and Dana Chavez (Christopher); great-granddaughter, Nora Chavez; and dear family friend and caregiver, Munilla Steele.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 11, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Steve will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
