CHARLES WAEGNER Obituary
Feb. 4, 1934 – Sept. 8, 2025
Charles Richard Waegner, 91, died at home in Boulevard, California, on September 8, 2025. Rich was born February 4, 1934, to Fred and Clara Waegner in Houston, Texas. In California he attended Vista High School and studied agriculture at Cal Poly Pomona. He married Olivia Gongora on September 27, 1968.
For 19 years he worked for the Imperial County Agricultural Commissioner's office as an inspector and deputy commissioner. In April 1979, he was hired by Rockwood Chemical as a pest control advisor, later serving as President of Rockwood until his retirement in January 2016.
He was an avid collector of many things and had many interests. He enjoyed rock hunting, dove hunting, reading, studying plant pathology, gardening, identifying birds, collecting seeds, growing native plants, collecting antiques and Mexican ironwood carvings.
Rich is survived by his wife, Olivia; children daughters, Richelle Predmore, Melissa Waegner, Melissa Mara, and Nancy Rogers; grandchildren, Scott Miller, Ryan Giannini, Preston White, Hunter Toten Waegner, Sarah Robles, Anthony Martinez, and Jessica Martinez; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Alan Waegner, and son, Richard Mark Waegner.
A memorial gathering will be held in December. The family requests donations in Rich's memory be made to CAPCA Desert Valleys Scholarships fund, P.O. Box 391, Brawley, CA 92227.

When I arrived in the Imperial Valley in 1969 as an entomologist employed UCCE, Rich and Claude Finnell in the Ag department helped me become acquainted with the cropping systems and bug issues in the Valley. Rich was a source of endless information regarding pest issues in the Valley especially the recent infestations of the pink bollworm causing yield losses to cotton crops.
Rich connected me with farmers who cooperated with research trials to combat the pest along with research entomologist from University of California personnel in Riverside CA. That is just one example of his willingness to help me.
His help will forever be appreciated as friend and mentor. May he rest in peace with Jesus.
