Charles Weissman Obituary

Weissman, Dr. Charles
ALBANY - It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of Dr. Charles Weissman, 74, on the night of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Albany Medical Center, following a seven-year battle with Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy.
Born in Trenton, N.J., to the late Louis Weissman and Miriam Auerhahn, and later became stepson of the late Arthur Gang, Charlie moved to the Capital Region to attend college at RPI, where he was accepted to the biomedical pre-med program, followed by direct acceptance to Albany Medical College, where he earned his medical degree. He then completed fellowship training in medical oncology and hematology. He and his partners, Dr. John Ferraro and Dr. Robert Babcock, started New York Hematology Oncology Associates, at Seton Hall on July 1, 1979, providing care to patients in St. Mary's, Samaritan, Memorial, and the former Leonard hospitals. Charlie and John were later pivotal in the establishment of private practice oncology/hematology in the Capital District, that eventually led to the organization of New York Oncology Hematology (NYOH).
Throughout his more than 40-year career, he provided expert and compassionate care to countless patients and families. He served on the board for the American Cancer Society for many years. He was a true leader, and a large proponent of advancing his field through his contributions to clinical research. Admired by his patients and respected by his colleagues, Charlie was known for his boundless generosity, peaceful demeanor, and unwavering commitment to healing. He had an inclusive and accepting nature, warm sense of humor, ardent love and support for the arts, and was an avid golfer and RPI hockey fan. He leaves behind a legacy, not only of medical excellence, but of deep kindness and empathy. Known to many as Charlie, others as Uncle Charlie, others as Dr. Weissman, to his mom as Charles, and to us as Dad, he will be remembered for his remarkable ability to care, to connect, and to comfort. His spirit lives on in everyone whom he inspired to live each day as a compassionate friend to all.
Dr. Weissman leaves behind his two children, his pride and joys, Lindsey Madelyn Weissman and Jeremy Francis Weissman; his ex-wife, Dr. Susan Weaver; a brother, Robert; niece, Kimberly; nephew, Jason Weissman and families. He leaves a stepbrother, Mark Gang, wife Marilyn; stepsister, Linda Gomberg; and their families; a cousin, Michelle Miller (Fred); sister-in-law, Charleen Weaver (late Frank) beloved nieces, Madelyn (Josh and baby Hayes), Mary Kate (Joey), and Amanda (Karolina) Weaver, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Miriam; stepfather, Artie; father-in-law, Frank Weaver Sr.; brother-in-law, Frank Weaver Jr.; and by loving Sid, Suzie, and Button.
We would like to thank the Shahbazi and medical staff at House 14 of the Eddy Village Green, for their care of Charlie over the past three years. Thank you also to the Neurology Critical Care staff at Albany Medical Center, Dr. Panos Varelas, Dr. Dylan Jones and Dr. Lily Chau.
Services will be at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave., in Albany, Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10 a.m. Family will receive guests from 9 to 10 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Garden in Troy.

Dear Weissman Family,
My Deepest Condolences. I am sad and in tears as I write this message. Charley one of the best people in my life. Me and my entire family loved Charley. We spent a lot of time together during our youth in NJ and it was fun. He attended my Bar Mitzvah and I attended his wedding in Vermont up on the mountain. I am sorry that we did not spend more time together in our later years but he did come visit me at my home in Sarasota Florida and we enjoyed each other so much and had a ball. Bob if you or another family member reads this please call me. I want to talk to someone from the family.
Was my honor to have known Charley,
Gary Weisberg 9415445641

I had the honor of working with Dr Weissman/Charlie for many years at St Marys and then as a patient - he literally saved my life! He will always have a special place in my heart... the world lost a special soul and one of the best doctors I have ever had the privilege of working with in my 33 year nursing career. My sympathies to his entire family during this difficult time.

So sorry to hear of Charlie´s passing. I was going to visit Charlje with John Ferraro at the time of our 50th AMCH reunion, but unfortunately for us, fortunately for him, Charlie had been taken to Texas to a very special concert by his daughter , a noted opera singer. I agree with the generous descriptors his family made in his name and I´m sure they´re feeling of his loss is great but now he is finally free. Philip ( and Linda) Drew.
