Charlie "Andy" Anderson Jr was born in Port Gibson, MS on December 26, 1936. He was the fifth child of 16 children born to the late Charlie and Celia Anderson Sr.
He was a member of the Mercy Seat Baptist Church where he accepted Christ at an early age in Port Gibson, MS. He was educated in the public school system of Clairborne County, Mississippi. As a child, he attended Archie Elementary School from 1st grade to 8th grade. For high school, he went to the Clairborne County Training School and later worked at a local car parts store. Charlie was enlisted into the United States Army where he was first stationed in the desert just outside Phoenix, Arizona and served in a QuarterMaster Company. On November 30, 1954 at Fort Lee, Virginia, he served as a Colonel's Driver until his honorable discharge on November 29, 1957. He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio and began working at LTV Steel as a diesel mechanic for 41 years until he retired in 2000. Charlie initially become a member of the Israelite Baptist Church but then moved his membership to Zion Chapel under the leadership of Reverend Dr. George O. Stewart. He joined the mass and male chorus, the brotherhood group, was an evangelists team leader, and a deacon.
On September 9, 1961, Charlie married Rosa Lee Spears, who preceded him in death. Within this union, they were blessed with two children, Sandra Gail and Kenneth Wayne. On June 17, 1988, he married Annie Bray of Cleveland, Ohio. On April 1, 1996, Charlie was married to Charlotte Harris until his death. Within this union, they were blessed with two daughters, Sonya K. and Regina Lynette.
Charlie enjoyed bowling tournaments in and out of town and various leagues where he won prizes and trophies. His pastor and church friends traveled out of town to catch plenty of fish and would return and have a fish fry for the Tuesday Morning Bible Class. Charlie loved hot rods and drag racing so much that he built his own car. He also took pleasure in repairing family and friends vehicles.
When it came to his yard maintenance, he took pride in making it look nice and neat.
Charlie, 86, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at University Hospital Seidman Cancer Center.
Charlie was preceded in death my his parents; three brother: LJ, Levi, and Jonathan Anderson; four sisters: Jessie Bell Williams, Bobbie Jones, and Helen Duffin, Hattie Mae Turnipseed ; five brothers-in-law: Johnny Turnipseed, Jr., R. B. Williams, Richard Wilson, Nathaniel Jones, George Young, and Thomas Hyder, Sr.; one son-law-: William Chavis of Petersburg, VA; one grandson: Lewis Garris
Charlie is survived by his wife Charlotte Anderson of 27 years; seven children: Sandra Gail (Gene) Harrington of Baton Rouge, LA, Sandra Chavis of Petersburg, VA, Charlene Tompson of Cleveland, OH, Jenifer Johnson of Cleveland, OH, Jeffrey (Vernia) Johnson of Akron, OH, Kenneth (Angelina) Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio, Sonya K. Harris of Oakwood Village, OH, and Regina (Matthew) Meekins of Middleburg Heights, OH; eight siblings: Lucille Hyder, Shirley Wilson, Mary Young, Charlene Anderson, Sylvester (JoAnn) Anderson and Wanda Faye Anderson all of Port Gibson, MS, Stanley (Nga) Anderson of Warrensville Heights, OH, and Emma Lee Anderson of Elon, NC; thirteen grandchildren: Brett and Brian (Anya) Harrington of Washington DC, Shaquita Chavis of Virginia, Shardae (Andrew) Webb of Lyndhurst, OH, Shondor (Courtney) Thomas Jr. of University Heights, OH, Tiffany of Cleveland, OH, Quennel, Latasha, and Dominque Anderson of Cleveland, OH, Monique (Eric Scott) Clay of Lawrence, KS, and Griffin and RIVER Meekins of Middleburg Heights, OH; one sister-in-law: Florence Anderson of Port Gibson, MS; one brother-in-law: Eddie Duffin of Port Gibson, MS and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
