Charlie Blake Jr. also known as “Pops” fell asleep in death on October 27, 2025 at the age of 89. Charlie was born December 25, 1935 in Waverly Hall, GA to Charlie Blake Sr. and Nellie Kate Blake.
Charlie was a man of many facets, a unique blend of James Brown’s rhythm and John Wayne’s grit. His hearty laughter and witty one-liners often filled rooms, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Charlie spent the majority of his professional life in the automotive industry, specializing in tire maintenance. He took immense pride in his work, often saying “the journey of life is like a car ride. It goes smoothly when the tires are well maintained.”
His work ethic was only rivaled by his love for Westerns, dancing and baseball. A true fan of the Red Sox, he could often be found donning their cap and cheering them on whether they won or lost. His love for baseball began years ago when he was a young man in Georgia playing for his hometown team. Charlie was an embodiment of the quote “life may not be the party we hoped for, but while here we should dance.” And dance he did! His moves, often inspired by James Brown were a sight to behold. A true celebration of life itself.
Before coming to Boston in 1966, Charlie met and married Martha Whitehead in 1959. Together they built a long and lasting legacy that lives on. Left to mourn Charlie’s loss are the love of his life Martha “Beautiful” Blake and their 5 children: Sarah Blake Osorio (the late Adalberto), Nora Blake, Darlene Blake, Eva Carabin Blake and Bennie Blake.
19 grandchildren: Adalberto Jr. (Rebecca), Marquis (Kerrie), Lashonda, Tanisha, Dynell, Shontae’, Cassidy, Eziah, Shykeyla “Pumpkin”, Francisco, Zakiel “Partner”, Jalen, Destinei, Shainaya, Lorenzo, Dhakiyah, Amira, Cameron and Arianna. 15 great grandchildren: Brijanna, Armani, Sierra, Ahzari, Shannon, Jasaun, Aadyn, Xavier, Leyla, Kieran, Jermaine Jr., Tyarei, Malaysia, Zayne and Mayson.
Also left to mourn are his sister Lula Mae Hollis (the late Clyde), nephew Malcolm Hollis, sister-in-law Lillie Whitehead, brother-in-law Dock Whitehead Jr. and a host of other family and friends. Charlie is preceded in death by Charlie Sr. and Nellie Kate (parents), Robert and Johnny (brothers), Rasante’ and Ahqari (great grandsons), Khari and Leilani (great great granddaughters).
Charlie’s legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched with his loving and funny nature. As we remember Charlie, we find solace in Nora’s words, “Pops was not just my father, he was my best friend, my rock. He taught me the value of laughter, the joy of dance and the importance of living life to the fullest.”
Scripture (Isaiah 25:8)
He will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces. The reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth. For Jehovah himself has spoken it.
